Dedication

It was my mom who taught me to write. I was then inspired to become a writer by Mrs. Small’s reading of A Wrinkle in Time to my fifth-grade class. Mom saw this coming. A year earlier she

encouraged me to start a diary about my life, the writings of which continue today, some 40 years later.

Before motherhood, she was an English teacher. My pre-teen writing ineptitude would pull her out of early retirement and I became her most desperate pupil. She and I spent many hours writing together on the old dining room table kept in the basement family room. It was in that room where Mom and Dad read us Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island and Johanna Spyri’s Heidi. It was a Sunday night ritual every winter throughout elementary school: A blazing fire in the fireplace, a hot thick stew or grilled steak for dinner and us kids listening to great tales as we snuggled in front of the fireplace.

On Sunday nights I would stow away on a Mississippi raft with Huck and Tom; live in a tree house with the Swiss Family Robinson; and puzzle over solitude with Robinson Crusoe. My parents knew how to use words to build picturesque worlds in our minds. When my mind was blank from the struggles of high school term-paper- phobia, my mother would remind me of the fireside stories of my

viii

childhood. Immediately I could feel the warmth of the crackling wood and the words would start to flow again onto the paper.

Knowing that I am dedicating this book to my mother, I am misty with memories of how we wrote some of the greatest vaudeville jokes and sketches on that old table. Our whole family loved and continues to love the theater. Musicals and comedies are the top of the heap. As I share with you the stories of my family and patients, I hope you find the joy and comfort that my boyhood found in great books snuggling by the fire.

This book is written in loving gratitude to Barbara Ann Lewis, my mother, and her only brother, Philip Halfaker, who constantly inspired adventure in my soul. Thank you, Mom. May my writings honor your teachings.

Your loving son,

Blair

My mom would like you to know what to read to your kids. First, start reading to them before they are born and make sure that by the time they finish the fifth grade they have read:

Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan

William Howard Armstrong’s Sounder L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz

Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden

Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book

C. S. Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe Astrid Lindgren’s Pippi Longstocking

A.A. Milne’s The House at Pooh Corner L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables

Anna Sewell’s Black Beauty

Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island Johanna Spyri’s Heidi

J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit

E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web

Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn

She thought this list would get you started. Ask your librarian for more titles and suggestions. Mom would be so happy if you did.
