The Climate of the British Isles.

The British Isles which are surrounded by the ocean have an insular climate. The climate is moister and more equable than that of Central Europe.

The three things that chiefly determine the climate of England are:

1) the position of the island in the temperate belt ;

2) the fact that the prevailing winds blow from the west and south-west ;

3) the warm current - the Gulf Stream that flows from the Gulf of Mexico along the western shores of England.

The British Isles are situated in the temperature zone, between the parallels on which Moscow and Kiev are situated. The climate is mild, and strong frosts are rare. Due to the moderating influences of the sea the Gulf Stream, the January temperature is higher and the July temperature lower than in any other country of the same latitude. That is why the British ports are ice-free and its rivers aren't frozen throughout the year.

It is hard to say that England has typical weather because of the sudden changes that occur.

On the average, Britain has 204 rainy days a year, with the maximum in the west. As a result, there are thick fogs there which last for days and weeks at a time during the autumn and winter. In the mountains there is heavier rainfall than in the plains of the south and east. The driest period is from March to June and the wettest months are from October to January.

The average range of temperature ( from winter to summer ) is from 5 to 23 degrees above zero. During a normal summer the temperature sometimes rises above 30 degrees in the south. Winter temperatures below 10 degrees are rare. It seldom snows heavily in winter, frost is rare. January and February are usually the coldest months, July and August are the warmest. Still the wind may bring winter cold in spring or summer days. Sometimes it brings whirlwinds or hurricanes. Droughts are rare. The lack of sunshine hinders the cultivation of many species of plants, especially grain crops. However, the humid and mild climate is good for plants. Trees and flowers begin to blossom early in spring, grasses grow all the year round, providing fodder for cattle.

So, we may say that the British climate has three main features: it is mild, humid and changeable. That means that it is never too hot or too cold.

          Британских островах, окруженных океаном имеют островной климат. Климат влажный и более ровный, чем в Центральной Европе.

           Три вещи, которые главным образом определяющих климат Англии являются:

1) положение острова в умеренном поясе;

2) тот факт, что преобладающие ветры дуют с запада и юго-запада;

3) теплое течение - Гольфстрим, который течет из Мексиканского залива вдоль западных берегов Англии.

            Британские острова расположены в зоне температур, между параллелями, на котором Москвы и Киева находятся. Климат мягкий, и сильные морозы редко. В связи с смягчающее влияние моря Гольфстрима, температура января выше, а температура июля ниже, чем в любой другой стране той же широте. Именно поэтому британские порты свободные ото льда реки и ее не заморожены в течение года.

             Трудно сказать, что Англия имеет типичную погоду из-за резких изменений, которые происходят.

             В среднем, Великобритания имеет 204 дождливых дней в году, с максимальной на западе. В результате, есть густые туманы там, которые длятся в течение дней и недель, в то время, в течение осени и зимы. В горах тяжелее осадков, чем на равнине на юге и востоке. Самый сухой период с марта по июнь и самые влажные месяцы с октября по январь.

              Средний диапазон температур (от зимы к лету) составляет от 5 до 23 градусов выше нуля. Во время нормального лета температура иногда поднимается выше 30 градусов на юге. Зимние температуры ниже 10 градусов редки. Редко идет снег тяжело зимой, мороз редко. Январь и февраль обычно самые холодные месяцы, июль и август являются самыми теплыми. Тем не менее ветер может принести зимний холод в весенние или летние дни. Иногда это приносит вихри и ураганы. Засухи редки. Отсутствие солнечного света препятствует выращиванию многих видов растений, особенно зерновых культур. Тем не менее, влажный и мягкий климат хорош для растений. Деревья и цветы начинают цвести в начале весны, травы растут круглый год, обеспечивая кормом для скота.

               Таким образом, мы можем сказать, что британский климат имеет три основные функции: он мягкий, влажный и изменчива. Это означает, что она никогда не бывает слишком жарко или слишком холодно.
