I. C. Глаголы may – might

Слова may и might употребляются для выражения возможности в настоящем и в будущем. Между употреблением may / might, выражающими возможность нет различия. Однакоmight обозначает большую степень неуверенности.

It may / might be true. Это может быть правдой.

Tom may / might be able to help you. Томможет бытьсможет тебе помочь.

He may / might come later. Возможно, что он прибудет позже.

She will be allowed to use the dictionary. Ей разрешат пользоваться словарем.

He was allowed to see this film. Емуразрешилипосмотреть этот фильм.

You may as well go home. Ты можешьтакжепойти домой.

You might as well forget about it. Ты можешьсобственно (говоря)забыть об этом.

I. D. Translate the sentences

a) 1. I might travel around the world. 2. I don’t know what to give my girlfriend for her birthday. I might buy her a ring. 3. This may not be real. 4. My brother may / might be able to help you. 5. She may / might feel unhappy when she sees him with another girl. 6. They may / might not come to the meeting tonight. 7. I might give her a watch. 8. I may / might go to Austria. 9. It may / might snow later. 10. He may play the guitar. 11. I go to London. 12. I might invite them to dinner. 13. It might rain later. 14. He might be present at the meeting. 15. I might invite them to supper. 16. She might join us later. 17. I haven’t decided yet what to give my mother for her birthday. I might give her a watch.

b) 1. I might as well buy a detective story. 2. He might as well take books from the library. 3. We may as well visit Paris. 4. She might as well take a taxi. 5. We may as well go home. 6. We might as well play chess.

I. E. Complete the sentences with may / might and the verb

Don’t go out. The postman (come). Don’t go out. The postman may come.

1. Don’t forget to take an umbrella. It (rain). 2. I don’t want you to go home alone. I (walk) with you. 3. I don’t know what to give my girlfriend for her birthday. I (buy) her a ring. 4. I’m bored. II. A. Make up sentences using the models

II. B. Practise the dialogue (EE № 44)

- Years and years ago, when you were a boy – what was Christmas like?

- It always snowed a lot. On the day before Christmas Eve we decorated the Christmas tree and the whole house with bells, candles, chains and ribbons. I

the fire, talking and enjoying the atmosphere of Christmas. Christmas will

always hung a stocking near my bed. I dreamt of eight reindeers and Santa Claus coming to my room down the chimney. In the morning I could see the stocking stuffed with sweets and gifts.

- What did you usually have for dinner?

- Roast turkey and Christmas pudding. The whole family sat together in front of always remain enchanting and nothing will change that.
