COHESION AND ADHESION
When we consider the magnitude of the forces that must be applied to tear apart portions of solid bodies, it is evident that the particles composing the bodies must be mutually attracted, and by large forces. The particles are said to cohere, and the property is called cohesion. We know further that such forces must be effectively operative but over small distances, for a solid body, after being cut in two, will not recohere with cohesive forces that approach something like the original values even after the faces of the cut have been carefully polished.
72
By great refinement in polishing, and by pressing the surfaces together, still greater force can be developed, but the original value still will not be reestablished. Adhesion is a similar property, but involving unlike bodies in contact. Cohesions and adhesions are shown not only by liquids but also by solids. An interesting illustration is found in the phenomena that occur in contacts
between solids and liquids. Some liquids “wet” a given solid, but others do not. For
example, an attempt to empty a clean glass vessel after tilling it with water leaves the entire surface of contact wet, since the water has adhered to the glass so that the forces of cohesion of its own particles were unable to tear it away. This is not the only feasible example, as there are many other liquids with like adhesive properties. Contrasting behaviour is shown by mercury, that does not “wet” clean glass. So, a beaker filled with mercury can be completely emptied, as the cohesion of the particles of mercury is greater than adhesion between mercury and glass.

There are many reasons why management practices vary. In the first place, the practice of management is shaped by the cultural values of the manager. For example, remarkable differences exist between American styles of management and those adopted by European, Japanese or Middle-Eastern managers. Also, the same principles can rarely be implemented in different organizations in the same way; they must be tailored to fit the goals, people, and circumstances of the particular situations involved. Further differences in management practice will appear due to the personality and style of the manager.
The specifics of a manager’s job depend partly on what management level he is on. A second determinant of what a manager does is his functional responsibility. For example, the specific activities that must be dealt with by an engineering manager are quite different from those that would have to be handled by a production or sales manager. Finally, what a manager does depends on whether he is serving in a line or staff capacity.
Meetings serve many useful purposes, such as working out solutions to practical problems, formulating policies or decisions concerning future courses of action, and obtaining group acceptance of a decision or plan. In addition, there is a mutual sharing of information and an opportunity to clarify, stimulate, and sharpen the thinking of participants.
An advance agenda enhances understanding, generates ideas, and brings the group together primed with the best information they can muster. Furthermore, group members who come to meetings prepared are better motivated and derive greater satisfaction from the meeting.
All decisions should be reached by a consensus of group members. The discussion leader should have no pre-established decisions concerning the problems
78
scheduled. Otherwise, a meeting would not be necessary. The most likely possibility, however, is that the development of the new idea will go smoothly at first, only to give way to mounting frastration later on.
There is a subtle but important difference between controlling people and leading them. Control establishes the direction of human action; leadership elicits a particular quality of action. Also, management and leadership are not synonymous. Leadership is merely one style of management. A manager can be effective through other managerial styles, as long as they fit the requirements of the situation. Hence, managing is much broader than leading.
