As a result of the nationalization of land and large real estate in cities, the state became the sole
customer of construction works in Soviet Russia. In the first decade after the revolution, his ideological
dictates did not affect art. Open competitions, debates, original projects, and teaching systems at art
universities created a picture of a creative boom in the late 1910s and late 1920s. In the 1920s,
architecture was characterized by an intensive search for new styles and innovative forms. In the
first half of the 20s, when construction was limited, projects of various buildings (apartment houses,
labor halls, workers’ clubs, communal houses) were widely developed. A style of architecture
known as Constructivism was developed. Neoclassicism began to recover. The most ambitious,
though unfulfilled, plan was to build the Palace of Soviets in Moscow on the site of the Cathedral of
Christ the Savior. In 1929–1930, a lively debate broke out about settlement in socia list society —
a debate between “urbanists” and “des-urbanists”. The first (among them A.A. and L.A. Vesnins)
proposed the idea of creating commune cities with hotel-type housing and complete socialization of
all types of cultural and consumer se rvices, including c hild rearing. Their oppo nents (M.Y. Ginzburg
and others) believe that cities can be replaced by a highway network, according to which residential
buildings stretch in a continuous strip, followed by industrial and agricultural strips. At the same
time, each family was to be provided with a standard house and car. At the beginning of the 30s of
the 20th century there was a sharp turn in the development of Soviet architecture. In 1932 , all as soc ia t io ns
joined the Union of Architects of the USSR. Many buildings appeared, the size and richness of
the decoration. At the same time, massive construction works were carried out in the country.
Standard projects of residential buildings, schools, public institutions were developed. The development
of the construction industry was primaril y aimed at reducing costs and speeding up wor k: from 1927,
canvas blocks were used, and in 1940, the first panel houses were built. In 1935, l arge-scale works
on the reconstruction of Moscow began (the author of the project was V.N. Semenov). By 1941,
the ensemble of the center of Moscow was reshaped, the system of transport arteries of the city
was renewed, nine new bridges and granite embankments over the Moskva and Yauza rivers, three
subway lines, and green zones of Gorky were built. The Central Culture and Recreation Park was built.

Vesnin brothers
The Vesnin brothers: Leonid Vesnin (1880–1933), Victor Vesnin (1882–1950) and Alexander
Vesnin (1883–1959) were the leaders of Constructivist architecture, the main school of architecture
in the Soviet Union in the 1 920s and early 1930s. In 1906, the brot hers created their first public
architectural design, a neoclassical competition for a tram stop on Strastnaya Square. Another, the 1908
project of Alexander and Victor’s church in Balakovo combined elements of Ugl ic h an d K olo me ns k oe
medieval architecture. The project was proposed by the commission, but none of the brothers had an
architect’s license, and the church was built by Fyodor Shechtel. Viktor Vesnin later claimed that
Shechtel had followed the design of the Vesnin brothers, but modern authors give credit to Shechtel,
citing different proportions and a simplified alignment of the roof. Vesnin’s other sketches from this period
rely on traditional 19th-century eclecticism, with formal neoclassical colours. Each of these sketches
contains personal stylistic clues, b ut exact attribu tion to A lexand er, Leon id, or Vic tor rem ains co njectu re.

The first real building of the Vesnin brot hers, designed for the Boris Velikovsky firm, was
a neoclassical six-story residential building on Myasnitskaya Square, built in 1910. A year ago,
Leonid got his license as an architect, and the brothers became independent. Their first building,
the city post office on the same Myasnitskaya Street, was built according to a previous design by
Oskar Munz, approved for construction in 1911 and completed in 1912.
The death of their father in 1910, and perhaps an improvement in their financial situation,
prompted Alexander and Victor to return to the cla ssroom a nd purs ue voca tional educat ion. Alex ande r
graduated in May 1912. Incidentally, Alexander and Viktor’s 1911–1912 graduation projects are the
only architectural drawings signed by each brother, and thus give an idea of each brother’s own stylistic
preferences, which were later incorporated into the “Vesnin Brothers” trademark. A lexand er, in par ticu l ar,
excelled in Russian Renaissance art, but in a neoclassical, mediocre work. Nevertheless, in 1912–1913,
Vesnin’s firm established itself among the neoclassicists, as evidenced by the Historical Exhibition
of 1913, where their designs were displayed alongside those of Ivan Fomin, Ivan Zholtovsky, and
other masters of the style.

Architectural design
Architectural design is the first step to be taken when it is necessary to build or renovate. It entails
gathering all the essential information to execute the work, obey ing the technical norm s of documentation
and graphic representation. Drafting a project requires hiring an archite ct who has the nece ssary techn ical
knowledge to develop a proposal that meets the client’s needs and makes the best use of t he space.
An architectural project condenses a significant amount of information, which makes clear the need
for a qualified professional for its development, in addition to good planning. From the initial conversation
with the customer to the final project, we have a series of steps that need to be carefully worked out.
Any mistakes can compromise quality or even generate losses. The first step is the preliminary study.
The preliminary study consists of the layout options for the project, making the best possible use of space,
all based on the need pro gra m pre vious ly pr epa red. In t his sta ge, se veral st udie s are dra fted, whi ch c an
be drawings such as sketches (studies by hand) or 3D perspectives, remembering that they are very
schematic drawings, with the minimum information necessary for the client to understand the proposal.
In this stage, the first approvals by the client are carried out, such as construction systems, the general
organization of the environments, accesses, and dimensioning of the work. The preliminary project
consists of the final configuration of the proposed construction.
Here the most technical aspects of the project are defined, consideri ng all the requirements
contained in the needs program. As it is a more technical step, we already have a more accurate
idea of the quantitative situation, allowing the budgeting of the work and starting complementary
projects (hydraulic, electrical, lighting, etc.). The client must approve all projects developed at this stage.
The architectural project isn’t just a drawing but a document that gathers all the technical information
necessary to execute quality work reflecting all the client’s needs.
Therefore, it must be prepared by a qualified professional. It must meet the needs program,
technical legislation, and current regulations and offer the client all security and peace of mind with
the work.

trends in technology and the urge to get the best services and techno-equipped surroundings, architecture
is following similar trends.
There are many new applications and architecture technologies making the jobs of architects
easier at the same time more challenging. There is a need to adapt and get adhered to the upcoming
technologies in the best way to thrive in a challenging future.
1. The popularity of BIM (Building Information Modelling) is on new heights with all these
trends allowing the perfect distribution of work in all stages of the construction process and hence
enabling proper execution with lesser inaccuracies. It thus allows the work of several roles like
engineers, architects, estimators, clients, and many others in a single shared process. Revit, ArchiCAD,
and Allplan are some of the most renowned BIM-compatible software’s.
2. Artificial intelligence | Architecture in Technology. Artificial intelligence has started replacing
much of the manual work and increasing optimization by efficiently considering all respects from
weather and site conditions to experiencing virtual walkways. Robots, automation, and the Internet
of things have fairly started helping in creating and designing buildings with increased efficiency
and can work wonders in the future.
3. Big data. Big data is definitely the big thing. I t has cr ea t ed wav e s in arc h ite c tu re in var io us wa ys.
Architects are designing buildings that store big data servers and warehouses and not humans with
users demanding smarter buildings and data performances. With the greater availability of data and
the Internet of things, architects are able to access more data that helps them in designing unique
and more efficient buildings. Architects have revolutionized office design using big data.
4. Additive design in the form of 3D and 4D printing. Additive design involves both human
and artificial intelligence in the building and designin g process. It is no sooner that more robots
and humans will work together to build a project with greater efficiency.
3D printing has not only enabled the building of prototype models of actual structures, but now
this technology can build whole of a structure by itself. There have been trials of houses being built
by this technology by a few countries by now and this can really spark a new trend in architec ture
in the coming years.
5. Virtual reality and augmented reality. Mixed reality. Virtual reality allows architects to better
explain their ideas and concepts to the i r clie n ts in a rea l -life-like experience. VRs are the majorly hitting
trend among the clients and designer groups and can help create more efficient and user-specific
designs because of the experiences it offers. Augmented reality adds to the real-life experience by
overlaying 2D over 3D. It works like giving 3D effects of sound and touch to a 2D plan so that the
user or the designer can even feel the materials being put into the design.
Mixed reality on the other hand allows the interaction between physical spaces and virtual
spaces giving rise to concepts like vertical cities due to rapid urbanization and lack of spaces.
However, many of these technologies are further in stages of exploration and experimentation
and may need time to be used as widesprea d architectural tools. But und oubtedly, they are the future
of architecture and there is much more to it as we study more and more about them.

This text is given for reading, comprehension, discussion in groups, t hen choosing yourselves
an interesting theme on architecture for making a presentation of it.
The Influence of light on architecture
Light is the first and main factor of the phenomenal world. It would be impossible to perceive
the world around us without light, because no other sensory sensations have a greater impact on a person
than visual ones.
The history of human relations with natural light shows an infinite variety of techniques for
organizing (modeling) light and its semantic capacity — the ability to embody a wide range of beliefs
and values that cannot be expressed by material form alone. The first experience of this kind of
modeling are architectural monuments focused on the sun and solar cult: obelisks, Egyptian pyramids,
Stonehenge, etc. The main role in the construction of their spatial structures was played by the light
of the sun, stars and the moon. At the same time, according to the hymns of Aton, the deification of
the Sun and natural light was applied. A similar situation is observed in ancient Greece. Plato, the founder
of the metaphysics of light, considers light not only as an independent transcendental principle ,
but also as an important principle of cognition, because vision m otivates a person thin ks about proces ses
and allows him to see “ideas” — the essence of things.
The views of ancient philosophers, combined with the specific nature of natural illumination by
sunlight, are reflected in architecture. In the classical period, light was often used to reveal the shape
of objects, their plastics. The light confirmed the structure and, above all, the architectural order.
Natural light in archite ctural theory is studied within th e framework of lighting engineerin g,
the psychophysiological impact of light space on a person, as well as within the framework of the theory
of architectural form. Interpretation of the process of interaction between light and architecture
within the framework of lighting technology makes it possible to objectify the subjective processes
of human perception of light space. Computer modeling of the light field, based on data of the light
climate of the area, allows predicting the state of natural light with high accuracy, enabling architects
to make a meaningful approach to create an image of an architectural space, and also opens up wide
opportunities for studying the influence of natural light on the perception of an architectural structure.
Light is the most important factor in evaluating, as well as in understanding architecture.
The connection between light and architecture is based on t he principles of physics (energy and matter),
but it is also in the realm of perception. Light affects our perception, and architecture is used
to enhance or eliminate this perception. Light is a prerequisite for spatial perception, which is one of
the most important components of architecture. The issues of designing buildings for a certain emotional
feeling are an integral part of architectural design.
Since ancient times the relationship of the architect with light has crossed the limit of practical
necessity throughout the world. A lot of attent ion was paid to the functional and materi al co mponents
of the design, while the semantic and spiritual components of the organization of light remained
poorly studied. Until now, natural light has been considered in the theoretical works of architects
who turned to studies of it in the course of their own philosophical searches, but the ontology of
light as an independent direction in architectural design was not a separate object of their study.
The role of natural light in the formation of the architectural and artistic image of the internal space
of buildings in modern architecture has not yet been comprehensively studied. The study of the state
of the issue in the studies of architectural theorists at the present stage has shown that natural light is
considered as the basic category of architecture, which is the basis of its cultural and artistic value.
A comprehensive analysis of the creativity of modern architects, who use natural light as a means of
shaping the architectural space, made it possible to single out the following aspects of their activities.
