От автора
Потребность в настоящем пособии по английскому языку возникла в связи с необходимостью обеспечить выполнение программы учебного предмета «Иностранный язык профильного региона» (профиль «Европейские исследования»), утверждённой Методической комиссией МОиР ФГО НГТУ и ориентирующейся на предметнолексические темы страноведческого характера. Подобные темы занимают своё место в высшем образовании и в системном виде представлены в посвящённой Великобритании зарубежной и отечественной учебной литературе. Однако эти издания нацелены на вопросы страноведения и таким образом не могут в полной мере удовлетворять тем задачам, которые встают в процессе освоения иностранного языка и предполагают акцент на различных умениях в области речевой деятельности. Формирование таковых в рамках указанной программы требует сопряжения страноведческого материала и специальной методики преподавания.
Пособие предназначено для изучения следующих предметно-
лексических тем: География Великобритании; История Великобритании; Обычаи. Праздники. Тема Символы национальной идентич-
ности примыкает к первой из указанных и проходится в рамках проектной деятельности в малых группах.
Пособие нередко отсылает к зарубежным изданиям по страноведению. Однако в большинстве случаев составитель пособия использовала лишь представленные там аутентичные тексты и разрабатывала свою систему заданий к ним. Исходные тексты заимствовались также в отечественных источниках. Некоторые привлекаемые тексты подвергались сокращению и адаптации.
Предлагаемые составителем упражнения позволяют развивать умения диалогической и монологической речи; реферативного, по-

искового, аналитического чтения; понимания общего содержания и извлечения конкретной информации при слушании. Высокая информационная нагруженность, большой объём некоторых отобранных текстов обусловили необходимость применения визуального средства систематизации фактуальной информации. В качестве такого средства выступают таблицы. Составление и заполнение их облегчает освоение учебного материала, способствует оптимизации условий выполнения речевых заданий. Так, студенты учатся говорить опираясь на таблицы, что повышает культуру устной речи. Таблицы служат также овладению тематической лексикой. Работу над вокабуляром рекомендуется регулярно дополнять проверкой орфографии и знания межъязыковых соответствий через словарный диктант (spellingtranslation test), другими заданиями.
В качестве приложения в пособии приводятся 3 текста по теме «Обычаи. Праздники».

THE GEOGRAPHY OF BRITAIN
-Read the physical map of the British Isles: say what it shows. Give the English-language place names (toponyms) for the geographical features on the Russian-language-labelled map.
-Compare the flags with crosses and heraldic animals on them. Are any of them similar? How? Why?
-Where would you put the flags on the map?

Vocabulary work. Oral practice
1.Arrange the proper names in the text (see above) into groups of full and abbreviated forms. Notice the models after which the latter are patterned, cf.: Great Britain – Britain; the Falkland Islands – the Falklands, the Ural Mountains – the Urals, the Rocky Mountains Скалистые горы – the Rockies; the Pacific Ocean – the Pacific; Атлантический океан – Атлантика.
2.Find the following countries and geographical features on the map. How are the various names of one and the same item different?

3.3Find in the text Physical geography [4, p. 8-9] the English for the following phrases:

4. Pair work
4.1 Describe the geographical position and division of the British Isles, the relief of Great Britain. Use the words and phrases for those in (3.3) and the following ones: be located, be washed by, wash the coast of, be separated from … by …, stretch from … to, be / lie off the coast of, lie between … and … , lie to the north / west / south-west of …, originate / rise in … and flow (in)to / through … (about a river). Use the map [4, p. 9; 8, p. 31; other].

4.2Role play. Your younger sister has done poorly in her Geography class, and you are studying the physical map together. You need to learn the location and division of the British Isles, the geographical features of Great Britain, the place names.
4.3With a physical map before you, describe the location, the relief of the USA <nationalgeographic.com/maps/atlas/plate28.html>, Russia <nationalgeographic.com/maps/atlas/plate70.html>, some other European country <nationalgeographic.com/maps/atlas/plate55.html> [23].

1.Do the section What’s a county? [12, p. 4]
2.In county names -ce-, -w- are not pronounced, -er- is often pronounced /a:/. Notice the pronunciation of the endings in them: -shire (графство,
шир) -/ʃər/, -ford -/fəd/, -folk -/fək/, -ex -/iks/: Leicestershire /’le/-, Gloucestershire /’gla:/-, Warwickshire /’wɒ/-, Derbyshire, Berkshire.
3.Study the map of administrative division of England, read the county names. Give the full forms of the abbreviations: Berks, Wilts, Staffs, Stafford, Warwick, Hants. What is New Hampshire?
4.Study the list of the geographical regions of England and the map of its administrative division [17, p. 138-139].
5.Label on the skeleton map
(1) any 7-10 county names with the endings -shire, -land, -ford, -folk, -ex in them;
(2) the boundaries of the six geographical regions of the country. Refer to the list and the labelled map.

Listen to the text London and the Home Counties (abridged) [17, p. 138140, paras 1-3]. Are the following statements true (T) or false (F)?

-What do you know about British climate and weather? What reputations do they have?

1.Study the definitions below. Find the categorizing term in them. What is the difference between a climate and weather?

2.Study the following words with a dictionary:

Translate the weather forecast in Ex. 8 [Ibid., p. 12]. In pairs make reverse translation.
