to conceal any material evidence of evil intentions from keen eyes of the Yeomen of the Guard.

Remember, remember The Fifth of November

Gunpowder, treason and plot. For I see no reason

Why gunpowder treason Should ever be forgot.

Surely, it is not forgotten. On the 5th of November the song is sung by the children when they knock at the door asking for a «Penny for the guy» with which they buy fireworks to make a bonfire and burn on it a ragged dummy (a «guy») made of old clothes and straw. Even the smaller children are allowed to stay up until it is really dark so that they can admire the rockets that burst in the sky and send down a shower of many coloured sparks.

As a result of many injuries in the past time safety measures have been taken nowadays. Instead of numerous home-made fire-works and backgarden bonfires there are now publicly organized bonfires, and only factorymade fire-works are permitted. Some colleges and other institutions prepare elaborate guys for which prizes are awarded. Torchlight processions and carnivals with the traditional bonfire and a tar barrel where the effigy of Guy Fawkes is burned are very exciting and picturesque events attracting thousands of participants and onlookers.

It is interesting to note that nowadays Fawkes’ first name «Guy» is used in English to denote a person who is a figure of fun or ridicule in some way. But this negative connotation of the word is diminishing, and «guy» now is often used as a synonym to «fellow».

Thus the historical event of November 5 1605 gave birth to a new word and a new tradition.

My work is not hard. All year long I stay on a shelf in a cellar. Nobody disturbs me. But there is a very special day when I am called upon to do my duty. ___

2)How do you do. I see you are interested in English history. This is very good. There is an event in it, all intrigue and mystery, and I am the chief character in the drama. Would you like to hear?.. Listen.

It dates back to the times of severe conflicts between Catholics and Protestants in England. I was then a soldier, Catholic by belief. One day two Spanish gentlemen approached me with an unusual proposition. _____

(abridged, adapted)

Suggested words and phrases:

familiar; as we see it; unthinkable; path / road in life; Speech from the Throne; on the occasion of; woolsack; guard dressed in old-fashioned traditional uniforms; Tower ravens; put down for allowances; retain the reflection / gleam of; roughly.
