OUT OF WORK? FEELING DEPRESSED AND FRUSTRATED?
NEED HELP?
We are here to help you with this JOB HUNT book guiding you through all the ups and downs of your career development.
JUST GO FOR IT!
JOB HUNT is a language teaching course providing the readers with linguistic support and strategic guidance in a highly specific area of human enterprise, that of finding a job. The book addresses itself to a particular purpose and audience – it is an intermediate through advanced American English course for adult learners pursuing English for their career reasons.
We tried to write a double-purpose book that may not only teach the readers a lot about American English, but help them effectively advance their careers. The book offers the readers a stimulating and structured way to prepare for their own job search campaign, no matter in what language (English or Russian) it is conducted.
The book focuses on the American system of job search and application and gives an idea how the whole system works. In fact, it offers an integration of language and culture.
We outline the range of our prospective readers from the simple assumption that people are constantly changing their jobs or career fields looking for better opportunities. The other side to it is that there are currently lots of jobs available on the job market, so any person is sure to get a job, sooner or later, provided s/he is equipped with specific language skills and strategic prompts to conduct job hunt most effectively.
To the User
While looking for a job, you will need a great deal of effort, a lot of patience, and a strong determination not to be discouraged. To be successful in your job search you should always hope for the better, maintain a cheerful and optimistic attitude, and accentuate the skills you have acquired in your previous work history.
Using a step-by-step approach and focusing on the essential skills, this course will teach you how to make your job campaign a winning one.
UNIT 1 – teaches you how to start the job hunt, outlines the job search techniques, shows how and where to learn about market conditions, as well as how to handle job advertisements. It supplies you with basic vocabulary that you may need when speaking about job matters.
7
UNIT 2 – discusses networking letters as another simple way of conducting your job search. It helps you understand that once on the job market, you should let the people know you are ready, willing, and available.
UNIT 3 – teaches you how to properly present your qualification and work history, and design your resume so that it could create interest in you and prompt an interview.
UNIT 4 – gives you an idea how to circulate your resume by writing an application letter that interprets the facts on your resume and fits you for the particular job, thus helping convince the employer that you should be interviewed.
UNIT 5 – teaches you most important skills of selling yourself at an interview. You will learn proper techniques of handling interview questions so that it could win you a job offer.
UNIT 6 – shows you are not quite through with your job hunt or deal after you have completed the interview stage. Much more is to be taken care of before your name appears in the payrolls of your new job.
Once these basic skills have been mastered, your job hunt is going to be a rewarding experience.
To the Teacher
We believe that one of the greatest assets of this course is its interactive nature as it is constantly engaging the reader’s active participation through its organization, interactive tasks and decision-making approach. It integrates subject matter to language, giving each activity a real purpose and making each task challenging and meaningful.
The course is complete in itself, so there is no need for external supplementary material to cover the range of language and skills. It can be used both in and out of class. Though it is not specifically designed for self-study, the readers may find it possible to work through the material on their own, as there are lots of prompts both in the texts and exercises to help them do it effectively.
The book provides thorough training in relevant job hunt skills, comprehensive coverage of core language areas that job hunters find most rewarding to study, as well as lively discussion of job matters. It features a multi-skills syllabus integrating topics, structures, functions, and vocabulary. Reading, speaking, listening and writing are all covered both individually and as integrated skills. Thus, a complete writing syllabus, as offered by this course, begins with the basic information on the writing conventions and then proceeds to developing the integrated skills of writing a range of job hunt documents and letters essential for career needs. It is assumed throughout the course that the readers are familiar with basic grammar so that only relevant grammar and functions are revised in the Units.
The course consists of six Units following the real sequence of events during the job hunt campaign. These are ready-made and well-balanced Units which should be used as they stand.
8
Each Unit represents the interplay of all the variables at work at a certain stage of the real job hunt, each one introduces a different topic providing relevant information and teaching appropriate skills required to work through a particular stage as efficiently as possible.
Each Unit includes two texts focussing on the essentials. As the purpose of the texts is to help the reader get oriented, the texts contain up-to-date background information and provide guidance on how to act adequately in the situation. The texts are based on authentic materials and encourage creative response throughout.
The course is rich in activities that bring the information to life. It is a carefully organized sequence of stimulating and varied language activities which not only develop skills relevant to a particular stage but also contribute to the readers’ awareness of the job hunt on the whole. Most exercises guide the readers as they analyze the strategies used in the models. It should also be noted that samples are not presented as perfect documents but are open to revision, thus encouraging the reader’s analysis and discussion.
The exercises are followed by dialogs demonstrating conventional functions that job hunters may need in their search. No job hunt is complete without developing appropriate telephoning skills which are crucial for the success of the campaign.
The Role play section of each Unit is provided to further practice the skills and functions acquired in the Unit.
We would think that the goals we had in mind have been achieved if the book not only challenges and educates the readers, but actually helps in advancing their careers.
The authors note with appreciation the friendly support and encouragement of their colleagues at the Department of Foreign Languages, Russian Academy of Sciences, St.-Petersburg, Russia. We would like to express gratitude to Prof. Olga Truyevtseva and Associate Prof. Nataly Alexandrova for their care in reading the original manuscript. Special thanks are due to our colleague Associate Prof. Liudmila Smirnova, whose comments and positive criticism have resulted in important improvements. We also wish to thank Larry Joseph, Ph.D., of Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA, for his most thoughtful remarks, and a group of American students of Brigham Young University, Utah, USA: Taryn Burton, Mary Kosiek, Katherine Kutler, Nicole Nielsen, Allison Arnold, and Suzette Ward, who were so generous with their time and suggestions while reading the book.

Unit 1 Job Prospecting
READING, SPEAKING, AND WRITING
Text 1
1.Answer the questions before reading the text: Have you ever been unemployed? How much do you know about looking for a job?
2.Read the text. Is the job hunt process an employment in itself?
Hiring and Preparing a Dossier
Obtaining a job involves a lot of hard work. You will have to do more than simply walk into a personnel office and fill out an application form if you want to see your name added to the payroll.
As a jobseeker, you will have to follow a certain schedule that will involve (1) analyzing your strengths and restricting your search; (2) preparing a dossier (placement file); (3) looking in the right places for a job; (4) constructing a resume; (5) writing letters of application;
(6) attending an interview; (7) accepting or declining a job; (8) filling out a job application. You can secure a suitable job on today’s highly competitive job market if you keep in mind that the basic purpose of all this activity is to sell yourself, preferably to the best employer and for the highest price.
A position can become open for two major reasons: either someone has left (resigned, was fired, promoted, transferred, passed away) or increased workload requires increasing the head count*. Once the decision to hire is made, the employer writes a “requirement” (or “req” for short) which lists the qualifications (skills, education, personal traits, etc.) required of and desired in a candidate. A decision is usually made at this time about the pay range.
Some employers advertise their reqs by placing them in newspapers, on Internet, on the Intranet*, etc. Most give their names in the ads, some place anonymous ads with a P.O. Box number for responses (so called “blind ads”), to avoid unwanted phone calls and even personal
