1. Scientists believe ‘chemical process’ causes ozone
hole
Strong evidence has been found that an unknown “chemical process” is causing a mysterious hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica, according to a team of American scientists.
The scientists said, by satellite link from McMurdoo Station in Antarctica, that data from recent atmospheric measurements weakens other theories about the cause of the periodic thinning of the ozone layer over the southernmost part of the globe. The phenomenon peaks each October.
Other theories have attributed the thinking of the ozone to thermally caused upward wind pressures or to bursts of solar activity. The scientists said: “At present we have not conclusively established the cause of the ozone hole. However, we have strong evidence against theories that upward winds or high solar activities caused the depletion. We suspect a chemical process is fundamentally responsible for the formation of the hole”.
If the initial findings of the team are confirmed, they will dramatically narrow the search for the Antarctic ozone depletion and for the cause of what is believed to be a worldwide thinning of the atmospheric ozone.
Scientists and governments around the world have increasingly expressed concern over evidence that Earth’s ozone layer, much of which is in the stratosphere from 6 to 30 miles (9.7 to 49 kilometres) above the planets surface, is becoming depleted.
Ozone in the upper atmosphere acts as a shield protecting Earth and its inhabitants from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. Excessive
16
amounts of such radiation can cause skin cancer in humans, dаmage crops and harm fish and other wildlife.
The thinning has been seen most dramatically over Antarctica but a fairly sharp reduction in the ozone layer, starting around 1970, has been measured in other parts of the globe. Recent studies have found that ozone depletion increases as the distance from the equator increases.
A number of scientists say they believe that man-made chemicals, specifically chlorofluorocarbons used in refrigeration, aerosols and other commercial products, are major culprits in the ozone layer.
However, Dr. Susan Solomon of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, one of the scientists at McMurdoo, said that the evidence gathered so far did not point conclusively to chlorofluorocarbons or, for that matter, to any other man-made chemical. She suggested that, if anything, the evidence lessened the probability that chlorofluorocarbons by themselves were to blame.
The complexity of the ozone problem and the large number of questions that remain unanswered, Dr. Solomon said, were a cause for concern. The American scientists said their findings indicated that the thinning of the ozone layer was even more complicated that originally believed. They said the process may involve an interaction of ozone and atmospheric gases.
“Although the ozone hole phenomenon has captured the attention of many researchers in atmospheric chemistry”, Dr. Solomon said, “the cause may well be something not yet thought of”. She added, ”After this expedition, the search for the cause of the Antarctic ozone hole will be guided by measurements not only of ozone, but of ozone and a number of other closely related molecules”.
Dr. Crofton B. Farmer of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, who was also at McMurdoo, said that while there was not sufficient evidence to conclude yet that the ozone hole was produced by man-made chemicals, what was now being
17
observed in the Antarctic might be “nature giving us a gentle warning”.
The measurements by the US scientists on the ground confirmed satellite measurements of rapid depletion of ozone over the Antarctic. They found that the amount of ozone in the hole decreased by about 40 percent within a 20 - to 30 - day period, mostly at altitudes from 7.2 to 12 miles.
Some scientists and environmental groups are concerned that the rapid ozone depletion over Antarctica may be a precursor of a similar phenomenon in other areas of the globe. But other scientists note that the climate and other conditions in Antarctica are not duplicated elsewhere.
Recently, Dr. Donald Heath of NASA reported on findings of a Nimbus–7 satellite indicating findings of an ozone loss in the Arctic centered over Spitzbergen, Norway. NASA has not yet analyzed Dr. Heath’s findings, which show a smaller ozone hole that found over the Antarctic.
A group of industrialized nations is to meet in Geneva to discuss the ozone issue and to work on a protocol to limit global production of chlorine compounds.
2. A lunar observatory
On the far side of the moon, free of the electronic clamor from
Earth, astronauts could deploy telescopes to relay spectacular views of the universe to terrestrial scientists.
The far side of Earth's moon is extraordinarily clear and quiet. There is no atmosphere, and the land doesn't shake. The moon itself is a massive shield against the growing electronic clamor emanating from Earth. It is quite possibly the best location in the entire solar system for optical and radio telescopes, and NASA is exploring how to take advantage of it.
Building and operating an observatory on the side of the moon facing away from Earth could combine the drama of human space flight with the promise of high scientific yield. Like early Antarctic
18
scientific outposts, the station would not be permanently inhabited, though astronauts would visit it two weeks a year to perform experiments, study the lunar geology and make repairs on the observatory’s automatic systems.
The observatory project, simplest of NASA's four options, is also clearly within our grasp. It is a step beyond Apollo, says Michael Duke, chief of the solar-system-exploration division of the Johnson Space Center, “but it's not a very big step. We could have accomplished it with Apollo hardware.” The lunar observatory’s job would be to gather incredibly high-resolution views of the universe across the radio and optical spectrums. To accomplish this, astronauts would erect dozens of small radio-receiving antennas and mirrors across 10 to15 miles of the bleak lunar landscape. Signals picked up by each antenna would be sent to a moon-based computer, which would integral them into one image. The effect would be the same as if one gigantic single mirror or antenna had been deployed, instead of many.
Complex communications
The tricky part would be getting those wonderfully sharp images back to terrestrial scientists. The same characteristic that makes the far-side location so desirable for an observatory also makes it difficult to communicate with Earth: It's out of sight.
On elegant solution makes use of points in space where the gravitational pulls of Earth, sun and moon are in perfect balance. An object placed at such a libration point - a communications satellite, for instance - will stay there forever. Unfortunately, the closest libration point is behind the moon, also out of earthly view. But a satellite could be placed in a halo orbit around the point, an orbit wide enough to clear the moon. That way, signals could be relayed continuously between the observatory station and Earth.
The space station as currently planned would require only modest changes to accommodate the lunar-observatory mission. Additional living quarters would be needed for a crew that would service lunar vehicles, and a small hangar 50 feet wide and 100 feet high would have to be built for the 100.000-pound spacecraft that
19
would be boosted up to the station to carry scientists and equipment back and forth between the station and the moon. Four initial flights from the space station, starting around the year 2004, would be required to establish the observatory.
3. Machines for easier breathing
A man's home may be his castle, but it can also be a treacherous hiding place for a variety of air pollutants. Recent research has shown that the air inside a house (or an office building) often has higher concentrations of contaminants than does heavily polluted outside air. The major types of indoor pollutants are particulates (tobacco smoke, dust, animal hair), gases (carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, benzene) and microorganisms (fungi, bacteria, viruses). A number of new machines are using innovative approaches to clean indoor air more effectively and, in many cases, with greater energy efficiency.
An aluminum and charcoal filter
The Instapure Air Filtration System, which looks like a cross between a humidifier and an air conditioner, uses three - stage filtration process to remove particles and, according to the manufacturer, harmful gases from the air. In the first stage a fan draws air through a prefilter of open cell polyurethane foam. The air is then passed through a second filter made of coated glass fibers that removes bacteria and contaminants as small as 0.01 micron in diameter - one ten-thousandth the cross section of a human hair. A third filter uses a patented catalyst, LTC-95, along with activated carbon to complete the filtration process. Tiny aluminum beads are coated with LTC-95, which is a combination of chemicals consisting primarily of copper, nickel and palladium metals, and embedded in a quarter pound of activated charcoal.
The Instapure system is manufactured by Teledyne Water Pik of Ft. Collins, Colo. The system can be run for a few hours a week to 24 hours a day, depending on the user's needs. The LTC-95 filter is
