Часть 7. The Car

Max had a very old car. It was rusty and dirty, but its engine worked most of the time. One day he took his old car out of the garage and said to his wife, “I’m going to drive to Southampton and do some shopping”.

He came to a quiet road after a few kilometers, but then his car stopped. Max got out, opened the bonnet of the car and looked at the engine, but he didn’t find anything wrong with it.

His head was under the bonnet for quite a long time. Then a young man ran to the car and began pulling one of the red lights off the back of it. Surprised, Max looked up at the young man and shouted, “What are you doing there?”

The young man answered, “You can steal the pieces at the front. I’m going to take the ones at the back”.

Часть 8. The Restaurant

In hot, sunny countries, a lot of people like eating their meals in the fresh air. During the day, they eat under trees or big umbrellas, because the sun is usually very strong, but in the evening they eat under the moon and the stars.

People do this a lot in Italy. The restaurants put tables in the garden or in the street, and most people eat there and not inside the restaurants.

Renato was Italian. He came to London and bought a restaurant there. Then he said, “I’m going to put some of my tables in the street here, too”. But, as you might know, it rains a lot in England.

One day Mr. Jenkins went to Renato’s restaurant, and in the evening he said to his wife, “I had lunch at that new Italian Restaurant today, and it rained all the time. Drinking my soup took twenty-five minute”.

Часть 9. Planning ahead

Paul Young is a college student from England. He is 17 years old, and he wants to be a firefighter. Firefighters must be brave and strong, as their work is often dangerous. He works out twice a week at the local gym because he wants to be ready for the entrance test. He is sure he will pass it. After the test, in September, he is going to begin a training course. He knows the course isn’t going to be easy, but Paul is going to work really hard. He hopes he will pass it, so let’s wish him luck!

Roberto Fellini is a 21-year-old from Italy. He wants to work as a barman because he likes meeting people. A good barman has to be friendly and patient. This won’t be a problem for him, as he loves socializing and he never gets angry. He recently finished a bartending course in Rome and he is very excited, as he is going to get a full-time job at his uncle’s bar next summer.

Alice Wilkins is a 16-year-old from Scotland. She would like to work as a doctor because she likes helping sick people. It’s not an easy job, as doctors must be hardworking and careful. They often work very long hours and they mustn’t make mistakes. When Alice finishes school, she is going to study Medicine at university. She hopes she will be a good doctor.

Часть 10. Clever customer

Joe Biggs was a butcher. His shop was in a village in one of the most beautiful parts of the south of England, and he worked in it for many years while his father was there. Then his father stopped working at the age of 65, and Joe was alone in it, so he had to work harder. Joe worked five and a half days a week. His shop closed at one o’clock on Thursdays, and it stayed closed on Sunday. Saturdays were the busiest days.

Most of Joe’s meat came to the shop from the nearest town, but sometimes he got earlier than usual in the morning and drove into the city to choose meat because it was cheaper there. Joe had a big refrigerator in his shop, but he tried not to buy too much meat at a time, and to sell it before he bought more.

One Thursday a woman came into the shop at five minutes to one. “I’m sorry I’m late,” she said, “but my friends phoned me an hour ago to say that they were coming to see me in the evening, and I need some more meat”.

Joe had only one piece of good meat left in the shop. He looked at the price and said to the woman, “That is £6.50”.

“That piece is too small”, the woman answered. “Haven’t you got anything bigger?”

Joe went into the room behind his shop, opened the refrigerator, put the piece of meat into it, took it out again and closed the door with a loud bang. Then he brought the piece of meat back to the woman and said, “This piece is bigger and more expensive. It’s£8.75”.

“Good”, the woman answered with a smile. “Give me both of them, please”.
