Часть 4. Winter in different countries

In Britain the weather is often rainy, but in winter it’s also very cold and windy. In autumn and spring it can be quite windy but it’s not very cold. Summer can be quite warm but it can also be cloudy. Spring is a beautiful season because the trees are green and there are lots of flowers. It’s Christmas Eve, and Tracy is writing her parents a postcard:

“Dear Mum and Dad! Greetings from London. It’s windy today and it’s raining. The children are in their pajamas in the living-room. They are happy as they are decorating the Christmas tree at the moment. We miss you a lot. Love, Tracy.”

Brazil has a warm climate. The winter isn’t cold. In spring and autumn it is warm, but rainy. In summer it’s nearly always hot and sunny. Sometimes it rains suddenly and then the sun comes out again! Pamela is on holiday in Rio and she is writing her aunt a postcard:

“Dear Aunt Becky! Season’s greetings from Rio. The weather is fantastic today and we are on the beach. It’s very hot and the sun is shining, so we are all in our swimming costumes. Mum, Dad, Sheila and Frank are playing beach volleyball. There are a lot of people on the beach today. Everyone is swimming and enjoying the good weather. See you soon! Pamela”.

In Finland the weather is very cold in the winter and very warm in the summer. The winter is long and there are days when the sun doesn’t come out at all. The summer is short, but it’s warm, because the days are so long. The sun shines all day and night for most of the summer. In winter there is lots of snow and many people go skiing. Tom is writing a postcard to his friend Sally:

“A Happy New Year to all of you. You can’t imagine how cold it is in Helsinki! It is snowing heavily today, so the children are wearing their heavy jackets and gloves. They are making a snowman in the garden at the moment. Hope to see you soon. Best wishes, Tom”.

Часть 5. The best place in the world

Dear Ann,

I am writing to tell you about my native town. It is called Willeroy and it is a small town not far from London. It is a very beautiful place. It is surrounded by forests and fields and there is a river which divides the town into two parts. There are a lot of old buildings in Willeroy and many of them are famous, because different famous writers and musicians lived here.

All the citizens of Willeroy are proud of it. The town is 500 years old. It is a well-known mineral water resort, so even today thousands of people come here on their holidays every year. The air is fresh and clean here because of many forests and fields. But I like this town because I was born here. I know it very well — all the streets, all the buildings that tell us the history of this wonderful place. When I was a child I liked to listen to my grandmother’s stories about Willeroy: about knights, lords and fairies who lived here long ago. And even now, when I walk along the streets of this old town I imagine I can hear the mysterious sounds of old ages. Isn’t it a fairy-land?

I’d be very happy if you come here and see everything with your own eyes, because wise people say that “One eyewitness is better than ten hear-so’s”. I am sure you will love the wonderful atmosphere of my historical town. You must come and visit me one day! Goodbye for now!

Mrs. Jones wanted a picture for her living-room. She took the bus and went to town. She looked for a picture shop, and after a few minutes she found one. There were some pictures in the window, but she didn’t like them very much.

She went into the shop and looked at some other pictures. She liked some of those more. There was a picture of a young girl, and Mrs. Jones liked it very much. She went to the shopkeeper and said, “How much do you want for this picture?”

The shopkeeper turned the picture round. He looked at the back of it and then said, “Thirteen pounds”.

“Thirty pounds?” Mrs. Jones said. “That’s very expensive. I’m going to offer you twenty pounds for it”.

“I said, ‘Thirteen pounds’, not ‘Thirty pounds’,” the man answered. “Thirteen?” Mrs. Jones said. “Then I’m going to offer you nine

pounds for it”.
