Description of a Ship

Now, while Mike’s ship is on voyage, let us have a closer look at her. Mike sails on a ship of the «Baltiysky» type. She is quite a new vessel. Like her sister-ships she was built at the Turku shipyard in Finland.

Ships of this type have the following dimensions: length – 95 m, width –13.25 m, maximum draught – 4.89 m. Her deadweight is 2400 tons and her cargo-carrying capacity is 1987 tons. The ship’s loaded speed is 12 knots with the engine working at 360 r.p.m. (revolutions per minute).

The main part of a ship is her hull. The hull is divided by bulkheads into watertight compartments.

The ship has four decks. They are: the upper (weather) deck, the boat deck, the main deck, and the lower deck.

The navigation bridge and the wheel-house is on the upper deck. It is equipped with all modern navigational devices and instruments. The engines can be remotely controlled either from the main remote control station or from the bridge wings. In the wheelhouse there are two radar installations and an automatic steering device (autopilot) «Decca-Pilot 550». A smoke detector and a fire alarm automatic system located here make it possible to detect fire danger in time and to take the necessary measures.

The radio-room and the radio operator’s cabin are located on the boat deck.

On board the ship the members of the crew live in cabins. The officers’ cabins are on the main deck and the cabins of the engineers and deck hands are on the lower deck. The cabins are all comfortable though not very large. The ship has such modern conveniences as shower-rooms, a laundry and a sauna. The galley and the wardroom are on the main deck. The steering gear room is on the lower deck.

The engines are located in the engine-room. There are two main engines with 1740 h.p. (horse power) total capacity, three auxiliary engines and a boiler in the engine room. On the boat deck there is an emergency engine which is automatically switched on in case auxiliary engines stop.

The ship is also equipped with a water supply system and a semi-automatic signalling system.

Ships of this type have three holds intended for carrying bulk and general cargoes and equipped with a hydraulic hatch cover cleating system “McGregor” which makes it possible to open and close the hatches in a very short time.

A bow thruster allows the ship to turn in her own length.

The starboard anchor can be dropped by remote control from the bridge and a chain indicator registers the length of the paid chain. From the navigation point of view the ship has good manoeuvrability which allows her to make long voyages.
