General information about KFU
Founded in 1804, Kazan University is the second oldest university in Russia. An internationally acknowledged center of academic excellence, it is routinely listed among top 10 institutions of higher education in the country.
In October, 2009 the University received the high federal status. This became the logical continuation of the 205-year history of the development of Kazan University and a foothold for the breakthrough in the sphere of educational technologies. KFU is a bright example of a classical university – source of fundamental knowledge and constant development.
The main center of higher education for a vast Volga region, KFU has over 47 000 students (more than 1 000 of them are foreigners), who follow 180 bachelor degree and 120 master degree programs. Today KFU employs more than five thousand faculty members, including members of science academies, professors, state prize winners, and leading scientists. Visiting professors of foreign universities provide their experience and connections for the benefit of KFU students.

Research
The University carefully preserves the traditions of its world renowned scientific schools of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and linguistics. Over the last decade it has succeeded in promoting state-of-the art research in the areas of nanotechnologies and biomedicine, psychology and cultural studies, humanitarian and pedagogic technologies, often taking advantage of interdisciplinary approaches.
KFU continues to serve as a leading national research center, providing its students and staff, as well as academic visitors, with many new laboratories with high-level equipment, excellent museums, a botanical garden, research field stations, three astronomic observatories and many other facilities. Our Lobachevsky Library, containing over five million works, is one of the largest and oldest in Russia. The University also has IT centers, publishing houses and a recreational center that is at the heart of the cultural and sporting life of the city, as well as the 2013 World university games sport facilities.
