BROTHERS AND SISTERS

I – Interviewer, L – Louisa

L I’m the youngest of seven children. My oldest sister is still alive, age 1) …, and there are sixteen years between us. There were 2) …, two boys, and then me.

I Seven children! Wow! How did you 3) … together when you were children?

13

L Amazingly well. Being the youngest, my two brothers and I called our sisters 4) …, because they were either 5) … or working by the time we were born. But the seven of us all got along very well. But it’s different now, of course.

I Really? How?

L Well, when we were small, my 6) … often took care of us. Now my brothers and I are busy taking care of them.

I Tell me about your 7) … Julia. How has your relationship with her changed over the years?

L Julia was the sister who used to … on her holidays… used to take me for walks and so on. But then she became 8) … and went to Africa for twenty-three years. We wrote to one another and I was still her little sister. When she came back, it was shortly after my husband died we became very close and our whole 9) … changed and we became great friends.

I What do you see as the main 10) … and disadvantage of coming from such a large family?

L Hmm. I think the main advantage was that we learned how to enjoy life without having a lot of money I think our other 11) …, my rich cousins in the city, envied us. We had a lot of bikes, old clothes, but we had lots of freedom. In the city, they had to wear nice suits and behave correctly. I Disadvantages?

L I think it was very difficult sometimes to have 12) … , especially for a little girl like me. And

I was sad that we didn’t go away on holiday like some other children. But the advantages overweighed 13) … enormously, there’s no doubt about that.

I Six out of the seven of you are still alive. How closely have you kept in touch over the years? L Very closely. Of course we still phone each other all the time and see each other whenever we can. And we have 14) … every year. My granddaughter’s just had twins. That means we’ll have

15) … there this year. How marvelous!

Well organised, highly motivated communications strategy adviser. Geography graduate with recent professional experience developing communication strategy for positive change. Currently completing Master's in Development Studies with specific focus on sustainability. Fluent spoken and written English. Self-motivated, resourceful and able to motivate others, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Education

2008–2009 The School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, MSc (Hons) Development Studies (2.1 expected)

2003–2007 University College London, BA (Hons) Geography (2.1) 1__________

African NGO 'Sustainable Solutions'; Six-month volunteer project to educate Kenyan people about the importance of reforestation. My role was to assist the project team in devising and implementing strategies to communicate this message to local residents in different regions in Kenya. To do this effectively, I had to remain calm, polite and persuasive when talking to community leaders (2008)

As communications officer at UCL I represented the university at conferences and organised student union events. As part of the student union team I was responsible for dealing with suppliers, bands, etc. I assisted in organising and managing 12 successful events, all of which made a profit. (2006-2007)

2___________

In Sept 2007 I successfully completed an eight-person expedition to Austral Andes in Argentina, in the southwest of Santa Cruz on the border with Chile. Three months of training and fundraising preparation resulted in the successful crossing of the remote central part of the Southern Patagonian ice cap in

18

National Park. As the sole Spanish speaker I acted as spokesperson for our group, organising bookings and negotiating the expedition itinerary. (2007)

I organised and led sports and drama activities for 200 international students at a summer school in Shrewsbury. My role included motivating and supporting the less experienced members of the activities team. I devised a number of sporting tournaments for the summer school students and motivated the children and staff to get fully involved, culminating in an international volleyball competition. (2005)

3_______________

I worked with a large international team in Kenya. The nature of the project meant that I had to travel regularly throughout the country at short notice, and share basic living conditions. (2008) 4______________

I handled a wide variety of tasks and projects throughout the six-month project, each requiring different skills and approaches in order for targets to be achieved and obstacles to be overcome. I suggested an alternative communication strategy of meeting with local community leaders to discuss sustainability. The successful approach was adopted by the entire team across the country. (2008)

I updated and modified the website for Sustainable Solutions, resulting in a 40% increase in website traffic, (2008)

Exercise 4. Learn to distinguish between these synonyms: profession, field, job, occupation, specialization, trade, vocation, work. Read the explanation to see the difference:

Profession suggests a position that cannot be taken without a considerable amount of education and involves one’s creativity in mental rather than manual labor.

Vocation specifically stresses dedication. It can sound high flown: e.g. He chose painting as his vocation and earned his living by waiting on tables.

Occupation is neutral possibility for vocation. It does not sound over elegant.

Work, job by contrast may suggest a range of occupations from skilled labor to the most menial of position. Work is very general. Job is commonly used to refer to any sort of employment permanent or temporary, single task or regular position of employment.

Field is an informal and specialization a formal word for referring to smaller groupings within occupation: a medical student who intended to study in the field of surgery; a general knowledge of law but with specialization in divorce cases.
