«Каждая из разновидностей переводимого материала отличается своими специфическими чертами, которые ставят особые требования к переводу. То, что, например, может быть признано точным и правильным в переводе научного или делового текста, допускающего обороты книжно-письменной речи, легко может оказаться неуместным и неверным в переводе произведения художественной литературы, где полноценность перевода часто достигается именно путем отступлений от более дословной передачи, и наоборот».

Урок 1. ТЕКСТОВЫЕ ЖАНРЫ В ПИСЬМЕННОМ ПЕРЕВОДЕ

Упражнение 1. Прочитайте предложения. Выделите речевые клише1 и найдите им соответствия в русском языке. Для каких письменных текстов характерны эти клише (например, для научных статей, деловых писем, финансовой документации и др.)? Определите жанр, к которому относятся такие тексты.

Упражнение 3. При выработке стратегии перевода переводчик опирается на знание специфики текстовых жанров.

A company works with the media department of the ad agency to define how much reach, frequency, and impact the ad campaign should achieve. Suppose you want your advertising campaign to deliver

at least one exposure to 60 percent of the target market consisting of 1,000,000 people. This is 600,000 exposures. But you want the average person to see your ad three times during the campaign. That is 1,800,000 exposures. But it might take six exposures for the average person to notice your ad three times. Thus you need 3,600,000 exposures.

And suppose you want to use a high-impact media vehicle costing $20 per 1,000 exposures. Then the campaign should cost $72,000 ($20 × 3,600,000/1,000).

Notice that your company could use the same budget to reach more people with less frequency or to reach more people with lower-impact media vehicles. There are trade-offs among reach, frequency, and impact.

Упражнение 4. Деловая игра «Секретарь директора».

Понедельник. Директор переводческого агентства «Тема и рема» получил несколько срочных заказов и попросил Кристину Андреевну – своего секретаря – передать их в работу. Однако секретарь случайно уронила стопку текстов и не смогла привести их в порядок, поскольку не владеет иностранными языками. Вы – внештатные сотрудники агентства. Помогите секретарю справиться с проблемой. Определите, от каких клиентов были получены тексты, а затем отошлите их переводчикам нужной специализации (бланки со списками клиентов и сотрудников размещены после текстов). Обоснуйте свое решение.

Warranty

The Seller shall guarantee to the Buyer high manufacturing quality of the Goods delivered as well as their full conformity to the technical specifications stated in Appendix No.1 to the present Contract, which constitutes an integral part hereof.

Warranty period for the Goods is stated as 90 (ninety) calendar days from the delivery date under the DAP (Incoterms 2010).

In the event that the Goods supplied by the Seller as part of shipment lead to a failure when the Buyer (end user) utilizes that, the end user shall issue a relevant report within 72 (seventy two) hours to specify the cause of such failure. In the event the Buyer (end user) acknowledges the improper quality of the supplied Goods as the cause of the failure, then within 72 (seventy two) hours from the issuance of the relevant report, the Buyer (end user) shall notify the Seller thereof and Seller shall examine such notification, any supporting evidence provided by the end user, and do best endeavor to resolve the issue.

If required, end user is to supply the Seller any additional information requested by the Seller to investigate the claim.

In case the Seller admits that the failure of the supplied Goods has occurred due to the improper quality of the supplied Goods, the Seller’s and end user’s representatives shall sign a joint Protocol to ascertain that the claim is accepted by the Seller as grounded.

If the Seller accepts the above claim, the Seller shall fully reimburse the actually documented costs sustained by the Buyer (end user) or execute a free delivery of the Goods of the proper quality for the amount of the claim at Seller's option for weight and quantity specified in the claim.

Cash also includes money in bank amounts of the business organization that is available for payment of bills. It is the responsibility of the accountant to follow generally accepted accounting principles in placing individual assets in a specific and appropriate category. Assets may take many forms. While they may be grouped together into categories, as started above, they may be considered to be tangible and intangible assets as well. A tangible asset is one that can be readily seen, and possibly touched, such as those previously illustrated and those in the first three categories listed below.

They are physical assets. An intangible asset is without physical qualities, but has a value based on rights or privileges belonging to the owner.

Two examples of intangible assets are patents and franchises.

The assets of an organization are usually divided into four categories:

(1)current assets,

(2)investments,

(3)property, plant, and equipment,

(4)Intangible assets.

Current assets are defined as cash and other assets that can reasonably be expected to be converted to cash, used up, or sold within one year or less.

Examples of current assets include cash, accounts receivable (obligations due from customers), and supplies.

Investments are generally of a long – term nature, are not used in the normal operations of the organization, and are not expected to be converted to cash within the year.

Dear Sir,

We have reviewed the details of your fax dated 7/12/2005 (Reference 74-23-97) regarding amendments to the L/C (L/C № 3BM854966).

Our shipping manager has confirmed that they will accept the requested amendments to line 45A (addition of name LIDOS-20) and to line 78 (The payment of commission equaling USD 65). Regarding the requested amendments to line 46, they advise that they will only accept if the Bill of Lading and Packing Declaration are included in the list of documents required for issuing the L/C.

Please find attached a copy of the document which will help in the completion of the Packing Declaration. This document (Packing Declaration) is required by our Quarantine service in Australia and it is necessary for all cargo (if it is related to agriculture or not). It is important that the Packing Declaration be completed on your company letterhead.

Please confirm that this is acceptable and we will amend the L/C accordingly.

Sky-high prices. High rent multiples. Falling cap rates. Negative cash flows. Government rules piled higher and deeper. Persistent talk of real estate bubbles. If you’re beginning to question the wisdom of investing in real estate, you’re not alone. Open any business newspaper or financial magazine. You’re bound to see dire predictions about the end of real estate.

But wait. Before you draw a conclusion ask yourself, can you name a more profitable alternative? A portfolio of S&P 500 stocks that yield dividends at a rate of less than 2.0 percent a year? U.S. Treasury bonds that pay interest of 4.0 to 4.5 percent. Corporate bonds that might give you a point or two more interest than treasuries? Hedge funds? Private equity? Commodities? Savings accounts? Certificates of Deposits? I challenge anyone to run the numbers that will show the superiority of any of these choices.

Even the leading advocate for stocks, Jeremy Siegel (Stocks for the Long Run, Irwin, 1994), has been eating humble pie. Siegel has now tempered his advice and forecasts total returns from stocks of six to eight percent a year (before adjusting for inflation and taxes).

Six to eight percent! That’s hardly the kind of return that will build wealth and help you achieve financial freedom. That’s hardly the size of return necessary to fund a comfortable retirement

(assuming that you want to retire prior to age 75 to 80).

While the current situation on the Russian financial market is unstable following the 1998 financial crisis, the residential mortgage loan market provides both opportunities and risks for lenders. Withdrawal of funds from the securities markets by non-residents resulted in a reduction of the investment base on the GKO market by more than 60 billion. The funds from the securities market flew to hard currency, which resulted in a dramatic shortfall of Central Bank gold and hard currency reserves. As a result, the Central Bank raised refinancing rates which triggered higher rates in the consumer loan market, including mortgages.

The financial crisis in 1998 significantly reduced the number of Russian banks, including 70% of the top 20 banks in Russia. These banks were brought down primarily by an over-dependence on speculative investments including government securities. Nevertheless, eight Moscow-based banks originated over 2,130 mortgage loans in 1998 to the general public in the amount of over 77.5 million.

By 1999, Russian banks’ approach to residential mortgage lending changed to reflect the following:

•Compliance to industry-recognized standardized documentation

•Emphasis on targeted borrowers with verifiable income

•Loan amounts determined by verified income

With passage of the Law on Mortgage in 1998, Russian banks began making “traditional mortgage loans with an emphasis on targeted use of funds and careful borrower underwriting. According the market statistics, default rates on residential mortgage loans continue to be less than 1-2%, which is much lower than other loan types offered on the market.
