Ex.1 Practise translating sentences with modal verbs.
1.The police are to prevent crime before it occurs and identify and arrest criminals who have already broken the law.
2.To carry out these tasks police officers have to search for evidence, to seize illegal guns and drugs, identify and interrogate suspects, to interview witnesses and victims.
3.The police know their investigation ought to be through.
4.For trial they must provide the prosecutor with sufficient evidence, obtain confessions and take witnesses statements so that the prosecutor could prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
5.Therefore, soon after the crime is committed the police must make every effort to gather evidence that the prosecutor will be able to use in court to prove the case .

Functions and Translation of the Gerund
Герундий на русский язык может переводиться:
-именем существительным;
-неопределенной формой глагола;
-деепричастием;
-придаточным предложением.
В предложении герундий может выполнять следующие функции:
1. Подлежащее:
Detecting criminals is one of the main tasks of the investigator.
Розыск(разыскивать) преступников – одна из основных задач следователя.
2. Часть сказуемого:
One of the most important stages of investigation is detecting criminals.

The Gerundial Construction

The Absolute Participal Construction
Самостоятельный причастный оборот Самостоятельный причастный оборот – конструкция , в ко-

The evidence being strong ,the defendant was convicted .

Если этот оборот стоит перед главным предложением, то он переводится на русский язык придаточным предложением с сою-
зами так как, после того как, когда, если, поскольку . Participle I
всегда переводится сказуемым в личной форме глагола.
Photography is a valuable investigative technique,modern equipment enhancing its usefulness in investigation .
Фотографирование – важный следственный технический прием, причем современное оборудование усиливает его пользу при расследовании.
Если этот оборот стоит после главного предложения, то он переводится простым предложением с союзами а, и, причем или без союза.
Most trials are held in open court, the press having the right to be present.
Большинство судебных разбирательств проводится в открытом суде, и пресса имеет право присутствовать.
Ex. 2 Practise translating sentences with the absolute participle construction:
1.Knowledge of the elements of criminal offences being important for any police officer, the must study penal law.
2.Real direct evidence having been submitted, the defendant was found guilty and sentenceв to five years imprisonment.
3.The identification having been made by an objective eyewitness, the suspect admitted his guilt.

The Subjunctive Mood.
Сослагательное наклонение выражает действия, не соответствующие действительности, а желаемые, предполагаемые, возможные или маловероятные и нереальные.
Врусском языке сослагательное наклонение выражается, как правило, сочетанием формы прошедшего времени глагола с частицей « бы ».
Если бы он разыскал свидетелей, у нас была бы какаянибудь информация .
Всовременном английском языке сослагательное наклонение большей частью выражается сочетанием вспомогательного глагола would (возможен и глагол should для 1-го лица ед.ч. и мн.ч.) с основой смыслового глагола. Полные формы глагола
would/should могут заменяться сокращенной формой ‘d . I should like (I’d like) to interrogate the suspect at ones.
Мне хотелось допросить подозреваемого сразу.
They would like (they’d like)to give information on the case.
Им хотелось бы сообщить информацию по делу.
В отличие от форм сослагательного наклонения русского языка, не уточняющих времени, в английском языке имеются две формы Subjunctive:
1) Subjunctive I- сочетание would /should с простым инфи-
нитивом ( Simple Infinitive ), при котором действие соотносится с настоящим или будущим времени.

2) Subjunctive II – сочетание would/should с перфектным инфинитивом (Perfect Infinitive),которое выражает предложение, возможность, относящихся к прошедшему времени.

Следовательно хотелось бы побеседовать со свидетелями сразу после случившегося, но это было невозможно.
Сослагательное наклонение помимо would/should может быть также выражено с помощью модальных глаголов could, might – мог бы, смог бы.
The police could have apprehended the perpetrator if they had arrived at the crime scene a bit earlier.
Полиция могла бы задержать преступника, если бы они прибыли на место происшествия немного раньше.
В английской научной литературе сослагательное наклонение в основном используется с придаточным предложением условия.
