Why any New Law Banning Smacking Would Work Against Children
Hands up any parent who has never smacked their child. Hands up anyone who was never smacked as a child. The numbers are few. Since the dawn of history parents have corrected their children by smacking. But: it is already illegal in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Austria. Germany and Canada are likely to introduce some laws. Can Britain be far behind? The child experts agree that, physical punishment should be out lawed claiming physical chastisement of children leading to more violence in society.
But the cases of cruelty are different to the general rule of the odds mack administered by reasonable parents who do need to teach their children how to behave. In her excellent book on child care “Good children” Lynette Burrows writes that a quick, minimally-painful smack is the most sensible corrective in child development. The child learns what it must and must not do by these early means; the corrected, behaviour remains and the need for the sanction gradually disappears. The mother is the ideal person to do this since she combines love The “experts" who believe all smacking should be outlawed perhaps overlook the fact that there can be other forms of cruelty which can be very damaging to children. Coldness, emotional rejection, hurtful words and not spending time with children are cruel, too. “Never hug and kiss an infant”, wrote one expert in 1928. “Never let them sit on your lap. If you must, kiss them once on the forehead when they say goodnight Shake hands with them in the morning” .From Locke to Spock, child experts have generally been wrong when they laid down hard-and-fast rules. It is evident that we should treat their no strums today with common sense and reserve. We must also look at what works. Violent crime and aggression are just as much on the up surget in non-smacking Scandinavians elsewhere. In the Mediterranean summer resorts Swedish and Dutch teenagers bully and fight. In Greece and Spain people are appalled by the behaviour of these more “progressive” tourists. Parents must be responsible for their children until the age of majority. The laws controlling parental behaviour is a measure to remove power from mother in their own homes when their authority is already undermined by other influences such as television. Normal parents do not take any pleasure in punishing their children. Of course, we must reject cruelty or brutality to children: but making the reasonable smack illegal is not the way.
