Practice the dialogues and note down how different people speak about their hometowns.

  • So, tell me about your hometown, Joyce.

  • Well, it’s a real small town …

  • Really? What’s it like?

  • Oh, I think it’s a very boring place.

  • Why?

  • Well, there’s nothing exciting to do. No good restaurants. No night life of any kind. I really get bored there.

  • Oh, that’s too bad.

  • Yeah, but lots of people like it there because it’s so pretty.

  • Yeah?

  • It has lovely scenery – lots of mountains, rivers, lakes, trees …

  • Well, I don’t know, Joyce, it sounds like a nice place.

  • Well, yeah, if you like to go hunting in the summer and skiing in the winter. But, you know, I’m not the outdoor type! I’m a real city person!

  • Have you come from a big city, Lou?

  • Oh, yes. It’s pretty big.

  • What’s it like there?

  • Oh, it’s a really great place. It has some fantastic art museums, and wonderful theatres, and terrific restaurants of all kinds.

  • Ah … really? And how are the prices? Is it expensive?

  • Yeah, I guess so. Food costs a lot both in the supermarkets and in restaurants. And apartments! They are so hard to find and the rents are pretty high.

  • Yeah, I guess it’s expensive everywhere these days.

***

  • Hey, Nick. Are you going home for the holidays?

  • No way!

  • Oh, why not?

  • I don’t like my hometown. Too many people, too many buildings, too many factories. It’s big and it’s ugly! I like places that are small and quiet. Like here!

  • Is it really as bad as that?

  • I’ve told you, Mike. In fact, it’s a new industrial city with a few sleeping areas, with no interesting places to go.

In pairs talk about your hometown. Ask your partner:

  1. what his hometown is like; what things he likes/doesn’t like

  2. if it is an interesting place; if it is safe, etc.

  3. if there are any shops, restaurants, theatres, museums, etc.
