Advertising and promotion

As a rule, the Lanes spend 3% of their sales revenues onadvertising. They start a new advertising campaign every time theyput a new product on the market. The main aim of an advertisingcampaign is to make potential customers believe that a product isworth buying.

Kate: Before we start discussing our advertising planI ’ d l i k e to remind you that we have to remain within our3% advertising budget.

Robert: Do you mean that we have no money left for it?

Kate: Surely not, but we must sort out priorities.

Andrew: In that case we'd better advertise in the mass media.

Bruce: How expensive is advertising time on television?

Robert: We used to buy it at £ 2000 a minute, but prices might behigher now.

Bruce: How about the ads in newspapers and magazines?

advertising?

Kate: Not a bad idea at all. We can advertise our Sweety-Talkiewith girls' dresses by Smith and teddy-bears by Richards. We'll share the expenses with Richards and Smithand can have 3 adverts for the same amount of money.

Andrew: How about direct-mail advertising?

Kate: I don't think we can really-afford it.At the moment we don't do our own printing.

2 Andrew: I prefer to advertise Sweety-Talkie in theprincipal trade journals.

Kate: Do you really think we can afford that?

Andrew: How about transit advertising?

Kate: I'd prefer something more personal.

Andrew: If grandmother were here she wouldsay that a word of mouth is the best way of advertising.

Kate: I'd rather ask somebody who is less conservative
