Good Habits Begin Early

Let’s start our talk today with this question. Do you know that the formation of a child’s character begins at a very early age? Even a baby’s first impression leaves a definite trace on its brain. The conditions, in which a child lives, the relations between people around him, all this affects the child and has an influence on his character. In his early years a child grows rapidly both physically and mentally. He forms many useful habits and begins to talk and to think. These habits are the fundamental elements of character formation.

To the child a play means more than the fun of self-expression. In their play babies and young children experiment, explore and discover, learn an infinite variety of skills, develop their capacities. Adults – elder siblings, parents, relatives, neighbours have an important part in the children play. Even the youngest child wants someone around to appreciate what he is doing or to help him. As he gets older he needs more scope for his activities. Having the opportunity to handle and play with many different kinds of materials, the child begins to learn about colour, size and shape. He begins to develop the smaller muscles of hands and eyes. Much of a child’s play is an imitation of what he sees and hears.

Bloom's Taxonomy

Bloom's Taxonomy is a classification of learning objectives within education. It refers to a classification of the different objectives that educators set for students (learning objectives). The taxonomy was first presented in 1958 through the publication “The Taxonomy of Educational Objectives, The Classification of Educational Goals, Handbook I: Cognitive Domain”, by Benjamin Bloom (editor), M. D. Englehart, E. J. Furst, W. H. Hill, and David Krathwohl.

Bloom's Taxonomy divides educational objectives into three "domains:" Affective, Psychomotor, and Cognitive. Within the taxonomy learning at the higher levels is dependent on having attained prerequisite knowledge and skills at lower levels. A goal of Bloom's Taxonomy is to motivate educators to focus on all three domains, creating a more holistic form of education.

Affective

Skills in the affective domain describe the way people react emotionally and their ability to feel another living thing's pain or joy. Affective objectives typically target the awareness and growth in attitudes, emotion, and feelings. There are five levels in the affective domain moving through the lowest order processes to the highest: receiving (the lowest level), responding, valuing, organizing and characterizing.

Psychomotor

Skills in the psychomotor domain describe the ability to physically manipulate a tool or instrument like a hand or a hammer. Psychomotor objectives usually focus on change and/or development in behavior and/or skills.

Cognitive

Skills in the cognitive domain revolve around knowledge, comprehension, and critical thinking of a particular topic. Traditional education tends to emphasize the skills in this domain, particularly the lower-order objectives. There are six levels in the taxonomy, moving through the lowest order processes to the highest: knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation. Some critiques of Bloom's Taxonomy's cognitive domain admit the existence of these six categories, but question the existence of a sequential, hierarchical link. Some consider the three lowest levels as hierarchically ordered, but the three higher levels as parallel. Others say that it is sometimes better to move to Application before introducing concepts. This thinking would seem to relate to the method of problem-based learning.

Write a short summary (3-5 sentences) of the text basing it on the following items:

  • the topic of the text;

  • the points given to develop the topic;

  • some (or one) problems discussed by the author.
