Exercise 1. Read and translate the sentences into Russian paying attention to the forms and functions of the gerund.

Exercise 7. Translate into Russian paying attention to the gerund constructions.
1) Success in science often results from the scientist’s confining his/her attention to one problem over many years. 2) Mendeleev’s having established a periodic law of nature has entered his name into the history books of world science. 3) A brain-storming session consists of everybody’s proposing as many and as wild ideas as possible without being concerned as to whether they are workable. 4) We have heard of Newton having been suggested to have put down on paper his ideas. 5) The results of the experiment depended upon his having applied the proper technique. 6) Immediate recognition of a discovery depends largely on its being made at the proper moment. 7) Einstein, being awarded the Nobel prize in physics, soon became widely known. 8) His having carried out the measurements so easily doesn’t surprise us. 9) Their having failed to distinguish between these phenomena seems strange enough. 10) Her having mastered two languages helped her in her work. 11) He insists on his device being tested. 12) One cannot carry out experiments without proper laboratory technique having been mastered.
