1. Join the sentences using appropriate words and phrases:

1) He left early. He wanted to catch the train.

2) She set her alarm clock. She wanted to get up early.

3) I won’t leave the office. The manager may call.

4) He revised hard for the test. He wanted to succeed.

5) She locked the money in the case. Someone might steal it.

6) We made out a list of people to invite. We didn’t want to leave anyone out.

7) The doctor took her medicine bag. Someone might have been hurt.

8) We climbed the staircase. We wanted to save the cat.

9) I bought some water. I wanted to have something to drink.

10) They bought an old cinema. They wanted to turn it into a nightclub.

2. Join the sentences using the words and phrases in brackets:

1) The bank contacted me. They informed me that I was overdrawn (in order to).

2) The murderer wiped the gun. He didn’t want to leave his fingerprints (so that).

3) He doesn’t carry a lot of cash. He might get robbed (avoid)

4) She saved money. She intended to buy a house (with a view to)

3. Underline the appropriate expression:

It was midnight on Sunday 9th March and I was on duty. I had my walkie-talkie with me for/ so that I might contact my partner if I need him. I noticed that the door of number 14 Lime Avenue was open. 4. Put the verb in brackets into appropriate form:
