I. Let’s talk about Britain.

The official name of the country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It consists of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is a parliamentary monarchy. The head of the state is Queen Elizabeth II. The Parliament of Great Britain consists of two “houses”: the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The head of the government is Prime Minister David Cameron.

The United Kingdom is situated on the British Isles. It lies off the north-west of the European continent and is separated from France by the English Channel. The narrowest part of it is called the Strait of Dover.

The United Kingdom is washed by four seas: by the English Channel, the North Sea, the Irish Sea and by the Atlantic Ocean.

The area of the country is about 244, 820 (two hundred forty-four thousand eight hundred and twenty) square kilometers. The population is about 61 million people.

The capital of the country and of England is London. The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh. The capital of Wales is Cardiff. The capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast.

The monetary unit is the pound sterling. The flag of the country is called the Union Jack.

The climate of Great Britain is moderate and mild, it is influenced by the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic Ocean.

II. Do you know any symbols of Great Britain?

The state symbols of the country are the national flag, the coat of arms and the anthem. Each part of Great Britain has its symbol too. The red rose is for England, the daffodil (нарцисс) is for Wales, the shamrock (трилистник или кислица) is for Northern Ireland and the thistle (чертополох) is for Scotland.

III. What would you ask a British teenager about their holidays and traditions?

My questions will be:

1. What is English tea?

2. What national holidays do you celebrate in Britain?

3. How do you usually celebrate Halloween?

4. What are the most popular traditions in London?

IV. What sights in Britain would you advise me to visit?

In my opinion, four parts of Great Britain are very different from each other.

1. In England I would advise you to visit the Lake District, Stratford-upon-Avon, Stonehenge, Cambridge and Oxford.

2. In Scotland you should visit the highest peak of Great Britain Ben Nevis; the Highlands; Loch Ness, listen to bagpipes and see men wearing kilts.

3. In Wales you had better visit the National Park Snowdonia and see the highest mountain in Wales Snowdon.

4. In Northern Ireland I advise you to go to the Giant’s Causeway.

5. To my mind, a trip to Britain is impossible without visiting London, the capital of the country.

V. Why do you think Great Britain is one of the most visited countries in the world?

I think, that there are three main things which attract tourists to Great Britain. Firstly, the variety of beautiful nature: mountains and hills, valleys and plains, rivers and lakes, forests and islands, and of course, the sea. Secondly, a rich historical and cultural heritage. Thirdly, a lot of customs and traditions, which are thoroughly (тщательно, хорошо) observed in the country.
