I. Let’s talk about Belarus.

The official name of the country is the Republic of Belarus. It is situated in the centre of Europe and borders on Poland, Lithuania , Latvia, Russia and Ukraine. Belarus is situated at the crossroads of trade routes from west to east and from north to south.

The country occupies the territory of about 208 thousand square kilometers, the population is about 10 million people. The capital of the country is Minsk. There are 6 regions in Belarus: Brest, Vitebsk, Grodno, Gomel, Minsk and Mogilev regions. The two state languages are Russian and Belarusian. The climate is moderate continental.

I think, our country is very beautiful. It is a plain rising to hills. There are a lot of forests, swamps and fields. Very often Belarus is called a blue-eyed country because of numerous rivers and lakes.

The swamps of Belarus are called the “lungs” of Europe because of their unique ecosystems.

The country has been an independent state with its own government and constitution since 1991. It is a presidential republic. The President is the head of the state. The Parliament is called the National Assembly and consists of two chambers (палаты). The country has its national flag, the coat of arms and anthem.

II. Do you know any symbols of our country?

The well-known symbols of the republic are the European bison, the stork and the corn-flower.

The symbol of modern Belarus is the National Library with a monument to Francysk Skoryna in front of it in Minsk.

III. What questions about Belarus will you hear from a British teenager?

1. What are the longest rivers in your country?

2. What is the population of Minsk?

3. What is the origin of the name “Belarus”?

4. What are the most popular Belarusian customs and traditions?

IV. What Belarusian sights would you advise a foreigner to visit?

To my mind, Belarus is a country of rich historical and cultural heritage.

1. I would advise tourists to visit four sights which have been entered into the UNESCO World Heritage sites. They are Mir and Nesvizh Castles, the Belavezhskaya Puscha and the Struve Arc.

2. Tourists should visit such monuments of architecture as Castles in Zaslavle, Krevo, Ruzhany, Novogrudok, Golshany, St. Sophia Cathedral and St. Efrosinya Church in Polotsk.

3. There are many monuments dedicated to the Great Patriotic War. It would be nice to visit the Mount of Glory (Курган Славы), the Khatyn Memorial Complex, the Buynichi Field near Mogilev and Brest Fortress.

4. If you enjoy nature, I would recommend you to go to Lake Naroch or the Braslav Lakes Region, the Belavezhskaya Puscha National Park.

V. Do you think that geographical position of Belarus has advantages or disadvantages?

I think that geographical position of Belarus has both advantages and disadvantages.

The advantage is that it is situated in the centre of Europe at the crossroads of main trade routes. As a result, Belarus plays a role of a bridge between the European Union and the Russian Federation. Belarus cooperates with many countries in such spheres as trade, industry, politics, science, culture.

The disadvantage is that living in the centre of Europe, Belarus suffered a lot from numerous wars and battles which took place on its territory. Another disadvantage is that we are an inland country (we don’t have access to the sea).
