  1. Parents usually give pocket money to their children. How do you usually spend your pocket money?

I believe that parents should give teenagers pocket money because sensible spending of it teaches them a lot of. I’m given pocket money every day (once a week / once a month). I spend it on snacks at school and some stationery (канцтовары). Sometimes I save it up to buy presents and souvenirs for my family and friends. I think that pocket money helps teenagers to learn how to plan their budget. There are a lot of things they want to spend their money on, but the amount of money is limited. Moreover, teenagers get information about the cost of living. It helps them to realize what kind of job to choose in future to earn enough money for everything they want to get.

Card 14

I. Let’s talk about free time.

I think that leisure (досуг, свободное время) is given to us so that we could regain (восстановить) energy and strength before we return to work or studies. People spend their spare time differently. This depends on their character, interests and financial possibilities (возможности).

I’m sure that leisure should give us refreshment, inspiration and knowledge. Some people are passive during their leisure time, others are active.

To my mind, all people have some occupations (занятия) which they are fond of in their free time. These are hobbies. From my point of view, the most popular hobbies are reading, collecting, travelling, listening to music, gardening, sports, art, playing computer games and surfing the Internet.

There are hobbies which develop you physically and keep you fit. A lot of people are fond of fishing, walking in the forest, travelling, playing sport games, going to the swimming-pool or to the gym. Speaking about hobbies in general, I should say that all occupations are useful, they make our life interesting, exciting and full of sense.

II. What are your hobbies?

My hobbies are listening to music, hanging out with friends, (doing sport) and surfing the Internet.

I like sport because it keeps me fit. Music helps me relax. I prefer rock. I use the Internet for my studies, for watching films, listening to music, chatting with my friends.

III. What questions can you ask a British friend about his /her free time?

My questions will be:

1. Do you watch television every day?

2. Do you spend your free time in an active or in a passive way?

3. Do you go to the cinema with your friends or with your parents?

4. What music do you listen to?

IV. Give me some advice on what to do in my free time.

1. If I were you, I would take up some sport in your free time to change mental activity into

physical.

2. I advise you to read something for pleasure, because reading gives us knowledge, develops us spiritually and fills our life with joy and excitement.

3. You should take up a hobby because hobbies bring variety into our everyday routine and help us forget about all problems and difficulties.
