I. Let’s talk about shopping. Who does shopping in your family?

Going shopping is part and parcel of our everyday life. For some people it’s a pleasant pastime while for others it’s everyday routine. But whether you like going shopping or not, you have to do it because it’s necessary.

There are different kinds of shops, stores and supermarkets. Supermarkets sell all kinds of food: meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, dairy products (молочные продукты), bread, and a lot of goods for the house.

Department stores (универмаги) sell clothes for men, women and children, china (посуда), household electric appliances (электроприборы), furniture and other goods. Many people enjoy window-shopping.

As for our family, I cannot say that I’m a shopaholic; my parents do most of the shopping. They do it every day on the way from work. But at weekends I help them with this household chore. In general, I’m not fond of shopping, but from time to time I enjoy window-shopping with my best friend. If I need to buy some clothes or shoes I do it with my mother. Though we have different tastes in fashion, we try to compromise and I usually buy what I like.

  1. Do you like shopping in our city shops? Why (not)?

I can’t say that all our city shops are good for shopping, because very often they lack variety of goods, proper service and size. However, some of them are becoming more and more European-like. Their halls, shelves, adverts attract more customers. Long queues are little by little disappearing from our life and shopping gets some element of fun and entertainment.

Yes, I’m given pocket money every day (once a week / once a month). I spend it on snacks at school and some stationery (канцтовары). Sometimes I save it up to buy presents and souvenirs for my family and friends.

III. What questions will you ask your British friend about shopping in his/her country?

My questions will be:

1. How often do you go shopping?

2. What is your favourite shop?

3. Do you like going shopping alone or in a company?

4. Who does the shopping in your family?

IV. Give advice to foreigners about souvenirs from Belarus and where to buy them in Mogilev.

I think, Belarus is worth visiting and it’s natural that people want to buy some souvenirs to remind them of exciting and pleasant moments spent in the country. My advice will be:

1. You should buy some souvenirs made of straw (соломка) and flax (лён). There is a factory in Mogilev

producing these things and they have their own shop in the centre of the city. The prices are cheaper there.

2. I advise you to go to the Central Department Store where you can find souvenirs with Belarusian symbols: the European bison, the stork and the corn-flower.

3. You should also visit our Zoo in Buynichi not far from Mogilev. There is a village of crafts on its territory. You can have a wonderful day out looking at different animals, including the European bison, watching craftsmen at their work and buying some souvenirs in their shops.
