Directions
Approach from south-west.
From a position 5 miles SSW of Cayo Santiago (18º10’N, 65º44’W) the alignment (026º), of the summit of Cayo Santiago, with a round-topped peak (24 miles NNE) (being the second high point on the skyline from E), leads towards Puerto Humacao, in a least depth of 8.2 m (charted as 25 ft) (2 miles SSW), passing (with positions from the summit of Cayo Santiago):
ESE of a reef, on which lie a number of above-water rocks, extending 3 cables SE from Punta Fraile(5 ¾ miles SW) close off which stands a prominent, high, bare islet. Palmsa del Mar Breakwater Lights (port-hand and starboard-hand) are situated close S of the point. Thence:
ESE of a sunken reef, on which the sea breaks, and the shoals extending up to 5 cables SE from Punta Candelero (5 miles SW), which is low and covered with bushes and on which stand a few palm trees, thence:
ESE of a reef awash, extending 2 cables SE from Cayo Batata (12 m high) (3 miles SW) which is covered with grass, thence:
ESE of a patch, with a depth of 5.2 m (17 ft) over it (2 miles SW), thence:
ESE of a coral patch, with charted depth of 5.2 m (17 ft) (1 ¾ miles SW).
From a position about 2 miles S of Punta Petrona (17º56’N, 66º31’W), the inshore route leads NW then W and Sw, passing (with positions from Isla Caja de Muertos) (17º54’N, 66º31’W)):
At least 2 cables SW of the SW end of the reef fringing Cayos Cabezazos (8 miles ENE), thence:
Over the ridge which extends 3 ½ miles SW from Punta Petrona on which there are depths of 4.3 to 6.7 m (14 to 24 ft) in the NE-part and 7.0 to 9.1 m (23 to 30 ft) in the SW-part, thence:
NE of the reef fringing the У side of Cayo Berberia (3 ½ miles ENE) and extending 3 cables S from it, thence:
N then NW of the bar, with a least depth of 1.8 m (6 ft) over it, connecting Isla Caja de Muertos with Cayos Berberia. The sea seldom breaks on this bar, which is steep-to on its NW side and dangerous to approach. And:
Clear of several shoals, with depths of 4.2 to 5.2 m (14 to 17 ft) over them, which lie between the bar (above) and the coast, thence:
SE of Cayos Frios (4 ½ milesNNW), 3 small islets covered with bushes, lying 3 ½ cables offshore, which are fringed by a steep-to reef on the S side.
