Unit 9
Ukraine in the context of globalization
After the collapse of the USSR, Ukraine as an independent state had to face the problems of participating in international trade. As Ukraine is located on the crossroad of economic routes between the EU and Asia, it has the opportunity to be a transit country and tries to take this unique advantage.
A lot of different foreign companies and joint ventures operate in Ukraine nowadays. They are banks, insurance companies, manufacturing firms. Some Ukrainian firms closely co-operate with their foreign partners. We can claim that on joining the WTO in 2008 Ukraine officially integrated into the global market.
Even though Ukraine is not a member of the NATO we co-operate with this international organization.
Nowadays citizens of Ukraine travel to foreign countries much more than they used to. Many of them move to foreign countries to work there for some time, many go on holiday. Moreover, the number of cross-border marriages has increased dramatically.
As a result more and more Ukrainians, especially young people, can speak English, and many of them feel they need the language for their professional life and are eager to learn it. This is an unmistakable sign of the fact that Ukrainian society is becoming part of the global world.
Since Ukraine became independent, a lot has changed in our cultural life. We became more open to the influences of different countries and cultures. The first place among them belongs to the USA. The reason is obvious. Nowadays the USA is one of the most developed and powerful countries in the world. So, its foreign influence is very tangible in most countries and Ukraine isn’t an exception. This influence can be seen in many spheres of Ukrainian life.
We don’t only accept their habits, style of life, the attitude to reality, we take over their customs. We try to celebrate our holidays as Americans do; we decorate our apartments and houses as they do. We accept some of their holidays (like Halloween, St. Valentine’s Day). We sing Happy birthday to you instead of Mnohaya lita. There wouldn’t be any harm in it, but we seem to be too fond of all this. We insert a lot of English words in our language to sound cool.
Numerous innovations in Ukrainian cultural life lead to humiliation of our customs and traditions, to forgetting them. This way we indicate their inferior quality; we are ashamed of our culture and at the same time of our history., and language.
Financial, economical, industrial and technological power multiplied by the unlimited Internet abilities and modern advertizing technologies started to open one horizon after another, and each next more unified and available than the previous, maybe not always better.
Unit 17Recruitment
Job interview
Usually after an applicant for the job is shortlisted he or she will be invited to an interview. A job interview is a conversation between a potential employer and a job applicant or an interviewee. The job interview gives both of them a chance to learn more about each other. During the interview the employer hopes to find out whether or not the applicant is suitable for the job, while the applicant tries to learn more about the position he or she applies for. Sometimes an applicant is interviewed by an interview panel.
Typically a job interview takes approximately 20-30 min and consists of several stages.
The first is Introduction, where the interviewer and the applicant try to establish a rapport. Some general questions are asked, like what you prefer to be called, whether it was difficult to find the company office etc.
During the second stage the interviewer tries to judge the applicant’s skills, to explore their experience, motivation, goals, interests and personal values.
Then normally the interviewer reviews the CV, looks through references and asks questions about the applicant’s previous or present job. This is done to evaluate the applicant’s ability to communicate efficiently, to see what kind of character he or she is.
At the next stage the applicant is given some time to ask questions. This part of the interview is as important as the previous one because the interviewer tries to match the applicant’s career interests and qualifications with the available work opportunities.
At the end of the interview the interviewer usually asks a few trick questions, like “how do you deal with difficult people?”or “tell me something about yourself that you have never told anyone.”
A lot of employees have turned to using “killer questions” or “shock tactics”, such as these. By surprising the candidate with an original or difficult question, interviewers can get an honest reaction and an unplanned response and a real person
In fact, the interviewer isn’t interested in the response as much as the way the applicant responds. So, the recommendation is to stay calm, take a few deep breaths and win some time, saying, for example, “Actually, that’s interesting. I haven’t thought about it, but maybe I’d …”
It is essential to be well prepared for the interview as it is the chance to show that you are the right person for the job. Preparing means knowing as much as possible about the area the potential employer works for. It is advisable to conduct a lot of research into the company’s website. You also need to look your best, and try to arrive at least 10 minutes before the appointment time. When answering questions it is important to speak slowly and clearly. . It is bad to be “Yes”, or “No” person. Be prepared to ask your own questions about the job. It’s a good idea to practice asking and answering some of trick questions with friends. When it comes to interview questions, it pays to expect the unexpected.
And finally the interviewer will initiate the conclusion of the interview. The applicant should be ready to recognize the signals and express his or her thanks for the interviewer’s time and make sure the interviewer knows how to contact him or her.
Applying for a job
These days job seekers submit their CV or resume deliberately to companies they would like to work for. In other words, they do not apply for an advertised job, but hope the employer will be interested enough to keep their CV on file and contact them when the vacancy comes up.
When replying to an advertisement, candidates often fill in an application form and write a covering letter. Resumes, application forms and covering letters give employers written evidence of the applicant’s qualifications and skills. The goal of these documents is to prove as clearly and directly as possible how your qualifications match the job’s requirements. So, to show that you are more qualified than the competitors you need to do more than simply list your job responsibilities. It is good to give specific achievements, facts and figures. When writing about your prior experience it is better to use functional or skill-oriented format of your resume, not chronological. This way you can present your relevant experience and skills up front. When writing the application documents it also pays to be honest.
After the employer has received all the applications, they will screen them, that is, they will go through them and shortlist the candidates for interview. Usually the employer chooses those candidates who meet the criteria for the job. So the shortlisted candidates are informed about the date of the interview, which is the most important stage in the process of applying for the job.
If the interviewer or the interview panel is happy they will make a job offer. And the successful candidate starts work. These days, it is normal for successful candidates to have to work a probationary period – 3 – 6 month. Then they are offered a permanent post.
Application documents
The first step in getting a new job is completing application documents. There are some specific characteristics of each document and some rules to fill them in.
The typical job application documents are: a covering letter and a resume/ CV (Curriculum Vitae). The two are attached, with the letter on top. Although the letter is seen first, it should be written after the resume has been prepared. Having prepared the resume, you can easily identify the ideas to include in the letter and the sequence in which to present them.
A resume or CV is a summary of your career history, the skills and experiences you have gained during the course of it. A good resume should: attract attention, create a positive impression and present your relevant skills and qualities clearly and concisely.
The purpose of the resume is to convey to an employer why you should be hired. Consider it as your personal marketing instrument. A good resume will help you to open the door to an interview.
There are two kinds of resumes: employment and academic (or CV - curriculum vitae - a Latin for "the course of one's life"). CV is used by professionals in medical, academic and scientific fields and focuses on academic pursuits and achievements. Trying to decide whether you need a CV or resume remember that the employment resume is shorter and that educational and medical institutions are accustomed to evaluating candidates based on CVs, while private industry employers are familiar with traditional resume formats. If we add to employment resume some other sections like Conferences, seminars, Papers, Publications, we get an academic resume. So in business we deal with resumes.
The resume, as a standard summary of information can be sent off to many employers. Sections of the content can be changed according to different needs of organizations approached.
A cover letter is a document sent with your resume to provide additional information on your skills and experience.
A cover letter typically provides detailed information on why you are qualified for the job you are applying for. Effective cover or covering letters explain the reasons for your interest in the specific organization and identify your most relevant skills o rexperiences.
When it comes to a reference list don't include it when you send your resume or list references on your resume. Rather, have your references on a separate page that you can give to employers when they ask for them.
Before including a reference on your list, make sure that you have requested permission to use that person as a reference. Be sure to include full contact information for each of your references
Sometimes you will be asked to complete (fill in) an application form
