VI. The attributive clauses.

Subjunctive II is used in attributive clauses after the expressions it’s time, it’s about time, it’s high time.

it’s time smb were/did

e.g. It’s time you went to bed. It’s high time he were here.

The adverbial clauses of concession. Subjunctive II is used in adverbial clauses of concession after the conjunctions even if (даже если, хотя), even though (даже если, хотя).

do smth even if/ even though smb were/did smth/ had done smth

e.g. Even if he were free, he wouldn’t go with us.

Conditional sentences.

Sentences with adverbial clauses of condition are called “conditional sentences”. There are four types of conditional sentences in English. They are the following:

a) Type I .Sentences of real condition.

In such sentences the indicative and the imperative moods are used both in the principle and in the subordinate clause.

e.g. If he is working now, don’t disturb him. If the weather is fine tomorrow, we’ll go for a walk.

b) Type II. Sentences of unreal condition referring to the present or to the future.

In such sentences the non-perfect form of the conditional mood is used in the principle clause and non-perfect form of subjunctive II is used in the adverbial clause of condition.

e.g. If he were here now, he would help us.

c) Type III. Sentences of unreal condition referring to the past.

In such sentences the perfect form of the conditional mood is used in the principle clause and the perfect form of subjunctive II is used in the subordinate clause of condition.

e.g. If she had worked hard, she would have passed the exam.

d) Type IV. Mixed conditional sentences.

They are combinations of sentences of type II and type III, that is, one of the clauses refers to the present or future, while the other refers to the past.

e.g. If you had told me everything before, I wouldn’t be in a difficult situation now.

If she were clever, she would have married him long ago.
