The liver, which is the largest gland in the body, has several important functions in addition to the secretion of bile. It regulates the glucose content of the blood through the formation of glycogen and its change back into glucose, as needed by the body.
It splits off nitrogen in the form of ammonia from waste amino acids and converts it into urea and other excretory products. It protects the body against various poisonous substances, formed in the digestive tract through putrefaction, by changing them into non-poisonous compounds.
In addition, the liver is an important agent in the destruction of worn-out red blood cells and in the use of fat for fuel in the body.
