Activity 1

Interacting with those to whom you report

Your teachers have authority over you as a student. Teachers are in the school environment what supervisors are in the work environment. How well you are able to interact with teachers will give you an insight as to how well you will probably get along with a supervisor.

What You Are To Do: Take time to analyze how you interact with your teachers. Describe in writing how you can apply three techniques you have learned for good human relations to the relationships you have with your teachers. As you change your attitudes and actions, see if you notice improvement in your student-teacher relationships. You can begin practicing good human relations’ skills now.

Activity 2 the role of office workers

Sibyl, a receptionist at First City Bank, is attending a seminar for office workers. To help workers realize the importance of their jobs, the seminar leader asks them to answer three questions. Sibyl answered the questions as follows:

  1. What is your company’s main product or service?

Sibyl’s answer: First City Bank provides financial services.

B. How does your company benefit the community?

Sibyl’s answer: It provides a secure place for individuals and businesses to keep their money; it lends money so businesses can expand and individuals can buy such things as cars and houses, take vacations, and make home improvements.

C. What is your personal contribution to the company?

Sibyl’s answer: I greet customers and make them glad they chose First City Bank. I direct callers to the appropriate people so their needs can be met quickly.

Sibyl saw that doing her job helped the company benefit the community. Her job really was important!

What You Are To Do: Select a neighborhood company you would like to work for and a position you would like to hold. Then prepare answers to the same three questions that Sibyl answered.

Activity 3 outgoing mail procedures

Interacting with your co-workers

You work in an office where the mail is picked up by postal workers twice a day, at 10:30 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. Monday afternoon you receive a call from Vice-president in a branch office. He needs six copies of the company’s annual report by Wednesday. If the reports are in the 2:45 p.m. mail today, they will be delivered on Wednesday. You gather the annual reports, place them in a large envelope, and take them to the mailroom. You explain to Gayle, a mailroom worker, that the envelope must go with the 2:45 p.m. pick-up. Gayle says she understands.

Later in the day, you call Gayle to verify that the annual reports were sent. Gayle sheepishly replies that she was on break at 2:45. When she returned, she noticed that the postal carrier had overlooked the copies. They were not mailed.

You are annoyed. Should you tell Gayle how you feel? If so, what should you tell her? Should you report the incident to Gayle’s supervisor? How can you and Gayle work together to solve this problem?

What You Are To Do: Prepare a response to the questions raised.
