Text 3. Problems of Overweight.

If you are overweight, you are not alone. Sixty-six percent of adults in the U.S. are overweight or obese. Achieving a healthy weight can help you control your cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar. It might also help you prevent weight-related diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and some cancers.

Eating too much or not being physically active enough will make you overweight. To maintain your weight, the calories you eat must equal the energy you burn. To lose weight, you use more calories than you eat. A weight-control strategy might include:

  • Choosing low-fat, low-calorie foods

  • Eating smaller portions

  • Drinking water instead of sugary drinks

  • Being physically active

Some vegetable oils have saturated fats. These are coconut, palm, and palm kernel oils. You can reduce saturated fats in your diet. Eat only a small amount of egg yolks, hard cheeses, whole milk, cream, ice cream, butter, and fatty meats. Choose lean protein foods. Good sources are soy, fish, skinless chicken, lean meat, and fat-free or 1% dairy products. Avoid frying food. Fried food absorbs the fats from cooking oils. This increases your fat intake. If you do fry, use polyunsaturated oils.

Obesity isn’t just a cosmetic problem: it’s a health problem as well as. If you are overweight you are more likely to develop health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, certain types of cancer, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis etc. Non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (type 2 diabetes) is the most common type of diabetes in the western world. It is a major cause of the death, heart disease, kidney disease, stroke and blindness.

Whether you are trying to lose weight or maintain you weight you should take a look at your eating habits and try to improve them. Try to eat a variety of foods especially pasta, rice, bread and other whole-grain foods. Making physical activity a part of your daily life is an important way to help control your weight and lower your risk of health’s problems.

Regular exercise is also important to maintaining a healthy weight. Simple ways to become more physically active include walking to the store or taking the stairs instead of the elevator/
