Intensive reading – Reading slowly with concentration to get specific details.
When we read shorter texts like a research paper for getting specific details or information, we read slowly with a lot of concentration. This is known as intensive reading. When you read a book as a resource material for research, you read it intensively because the overall understanding is not the objective or purpose of our reading. When you read an article in order to write a review on it, you read it intensively. We use all the skills of reading when we do intensive reading.
Goals: comprehension of the text; determining & working on language features
What are the features of a good intensive reading exercise?
focuses on items or strategies that apply to any text (the most important is to get knowledge of the language and ways of dealing with it rather than an understanding of a particular message from the text)
requires the learners to read the text (the learners need to read the text or at least part of it in order to do the exercise)
provides useful feedback for the learners and the teacher (If the learners were not successful on some parts of the exercise, then they should be aware of what they have to learn in order to do the exercise successfully with another text.)
is easy to make (Teachers have to choose texts suited to the particular needs of their learners)
How can we motivate our learners to read more?
Provide a sampling of texts all genres not only in the form of books, but also newspapers, magazines! Don’t forget about 21 st venture literacies. Comic books are often great for young readers.
List and describe the word recognition strategies.
Phonics: The use of sound-symbol relationships to decode words.
Word Family : The use of familiar letter groupings to help recognize parts of words.
Context : The use of surrounding words to help figure out an unfamiliar word.
Morphemic analysis : The use of root words, suffixes, prefixes, and other word parts to recognize a word.
Skip the word: ignore it. If you are still creating meaning why to stop a process to figure out a word
Dictionary : monolingual and bilingual
Ask a friend: TURN TO A FRIEND AND ASK WHAT IS THIS WORD
How much time should learners spend on reading?
15-30 min per day in primary grades 30-60 min in Intermediate grades 40-90 min in middle school and high school
What are the benefits of graded readers? What are the sight words?
They allow learners to access extensive pieces of text, written with the aim of providing reading for pleasure. Stories, in other words. If they’re at the right level, learners can just read and enjoy them, without having to struggle. Being able to read a whole book gives learners great confidence.
Sight words are words that students recognize instantly. These are words for which they do not need to use letter cues, word parts, or context clues to know what they are when they occurred in a text. What words should students know by sight? Answer: The words that are used most frequently (she, but, come,go)
