Ukraine has a patriarchal family system.
Our emphasis on consumerism has led to deterioration of the institution of the family.
Marriage today is no longer a permanent or lifelong situation. It is a transient temporary development that two or more people agree to until it is no longer mutually beneficial.
Researches have found no evidence of a truly matriarchal system, in which the mother headed the family and held the most power in society. But in some cultures, the mother was especially honored.
Stepparents and children are generally challenged to deal with many feelings that are not present in biological families.
A family’s home life is often affected by relatives who live outside the family’s home.
Translation Practice
1.Suggest the Ukrainian for the following.
Writing Assignment
1.Compare an average British and Ukrainian family.
2.Write an essay on the issues discussed in the text. Show advantages and disadvantages of various types of living arrangements for senior citizens. Pay attention to the problem of separation of the generations.
In some countries it is a common practice for families to place their older relatives in nursing homes because of physical disabilities or illness rather than caring for them in their homes. Senior citizen centres decrease dependence on the children and provide a means for peer-group association. This is, however, less common in those countries whose values include fulfilling obligations to the extended family. They look for better alternatives to nursing homes. Some middle-age children provide care for older relatives in their own homes. Others attempt to find nursing care in their parents' own homes.
