3.1. Make an accentual-tonetic analysis of the following extract. Practise its expressive reading. Reading Passage: Commitment
1 To be professional requires commitment. 2 Teaching is not a job to be left at 5:00 in the afternoon and picked up again at 9:00 next morning. 3 To be professional demands that the teacher do whatever it takes to get the job done. 4 We work whenever, wherever, and however we can. 5 The twenty-four-hour teacher is no myth: even vacations and holidays are usually somehow turned into material for the classroom. 6 Students and their concerns are frequently the first thing teachers think of as they wake up in the morning and the last thing on their minds as they go to sleep at night. 7 This does not mean, however, that teachers have no personal lives or that they have no boundaries. 8 Because of the huge demands made on us (and ones we make on ourselves), teachers must learn to set boundaries. 9 Draw a professional line between yourself and your students. 10 True, we are our students’ friends, in that we care about them, and want what is best for them, but we cannot and shouldn’t cross the line and try to be «one of them».
