V. Study the chart about the main duties of Federal Courts.

These are the main duties of the federal courts:

• to hear cases about federal laws

• to hear cases about constitutional rights

• to guarantee the appeals process

The following chart shows the other duties of federal courts, which hear cases involving:

States

  • Between two states

  • Between citizens of two states

Foreign Governments

  • Between a state government and a foreign government

  • Between a U.S. citizen and a foreign citizen

  • If ambassadors have legal problems with the foreign governments where they work

Other Areas

  • About problems with American ships

  • About special problems with federal taxes, customs, etc.

  • For naturalization

VII. Read the accounts on several court cases. In each one, the sentence imposed by the judge has been blanked out. Working in groups of four, say what you think the sentence should have been. There is no need to try and replace the exact words. Just say what sentence should have been imposed.

How Erica put drug dealer behind bars
