Seminar 6 Parts of speech.

Objectives:

  • to assess students’ achievements in mastering the required theoretical material;

  • to enable students to form judgments of their own on the questions of diverse grammatical intricacies.

Questions for discussion:

  1. The notion of parts of speech. Main criteria for discrimination parts of speech.

  2. Different viewpoints as to the principles of classification of words into the parts of speech.

  3. *Notional and functional parts of speech.

1. Comment on the following terms:

language unit, language level, lexical meaning, grammatical meaning, lexico-grammatical meaning, part of speech, word, notional words, functional words, word form

2. Decide to what part of speech the words underlined may be assigned. Pose arguments.
