LVIV IVAN FRANKO NATIONAL UNIVERSITY
The Ivan Franko National University of L’viv was founded in 1661. In January 1940 it was given the name of I.Franko. On October 11, 1999 the University was given the status of the National University.
At present the University is made up of 17 faculties: Biology, Economics, Geography, Chemistry, Geology, History, Journalism, International Relations, Languages and Literature, Foreign Languages, Mechanics and Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Informatics, Philosophy, Physics, Law, Electronics, Culture and Arts. They offer two major forms of tuition – full-time and extramural.
An important pedagogical and scientific work is carried out at 100 departments. There are over one hundred laboratories and working units as well as the Computing Centre functioning here. The Zoological, Geological, Mineralogical Museums together with those of Numismatics and Archeology, an Observatory and Botanical Gardens stimulate the interests of students. The University library, with a very rich book depository, is one of the largest in Ukraine.
The Postgraduate Course provides training in more than 90 specialities in the field of the Humanities and Natural Sciences. It is a predominant form of the academic promotion of young scholars.
L’viv University maintains and extends its ties with the higher schools of Hungary, Germany, the USA, Canada, France, Austria, Belgium, Great Britain, Russia, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Portugal, Romania, Moldova. Many teachers and students participate in joint exchange programmes.
