Morphologically
we use old forms of pronouns: thou art\dost\hast, he doth, hath. The
elevated language includes a lot of archaic forms. AL can be
subdivided into 3 groups:
obsolescent
(устаревающие)
– thou – understood by everybody, but used only in specific
situations (church)
obsolete
– still understood, they are no longer used – I saw thee,
melhought
archaic
proper – they may not be recognized be native speakers – troth –
обет.
A
specific subgroup is called historisms – H die out together with
the notions they define. Yeoman – a very small farmer. Thane - тан
– удельный помещик.
Specifically
poetic words usually have neutral synonyms. Billow-wave, brine-salt
water, main-sea, deem-think, hapless – unhappy, aught-anything,
albeit – although, ere-before, oft-often, o’er-over,
morn-morning.
The
same word may have one poetic meaning and another standard meaning.
Fair
– справедливый, светловолосый; beautiful
Tall-высокий;
brave
Hall
– холл,
зал; чертог
