Past Perfect Tense вживається для вираження дії, яка відбулася в минулому до визначеного часу, або до іншої дії в минулому.

Теперішній час

момент у минулому,

Past Perfect момент у минулому визначається:

• by 6 o’clock yesterday

• before he came

• before they moved to London

• by that moment

Past Perfect утворюється за допомогою допоміжного дієслова to have у минулому часі (had) і третьої форми основного дієслова.

Наприклад,

I had finished my homework by that time. – Я закінчив своє домашнє завдання до того часу.

By 10 o’clock they had visited the Museum of Fine Arts and had been to a concert. – До десятої години вони відвідали Музей Мистецтва і побували на концерті.

Before you came I had phoned him. – Перед тим, як ти прийшов, я зателефонував йому.

Зверніть увагу на наступні речення:

After he had finished the report, we discussed its main points. – Після того, як він закінчив доклад, ми обговорили його основні моменти.

Past Perfect вживається в тій частині речення, яка описує більш пізнішу дію.

Але якщо кілька дій описуються в тій послідовності, в якій вони відбувалися, то у всіх випадках вживається Past Indefinite.

Наприклад,

We received your telegram, called a taxi and went straight to the airport.

У питальній формі допоміжне слово ставиться перед підметом.

Наприклад,

Had you finished your homework by that time?

У питаннях до підмета порядок слів не змінюється.

Наприклад,

Who had finished his homework by that time?

У негативній формі негативна частка not ставиться після допоміжного дієслова.

Наприклад,

I had not finished my homework by that time.
