The future continuous tense

The Future Continuous is formed by means of the Future Indefinite of the auxiliary verb to be and Participle I of the notional verb.

In the interrogative form the first auxiliary verb is placed before the sub­ject. In the negative form particle not is placed after the first auxiliary verb.

e.g. He will be reading.

Will he be reading?

He will not be reading.

1. The Future Continuous is used to denote an action which will be going on at a definite moment in the future. The definite moment is indicated either by another future action expressed by a verb in the Present Indefinite or by an adverbial phrase.

e.g. I’ll be working when you return.

At 12 o’clock I’ll still be working.

The definite moment is often not expressed, but is understood from the situa­tion.

e.g. I’m sure you won’t be able to speak to him, he’ll be working.

2. The Future Continuous is used to express an action which is sure to take

place in the future in the normal, natural course of events.

e.g. But my dear Ann, you’ll be getting into debt.

I feel I’ll be asking you the same question tomorrow.

Exercises (the future continuous tense)

Ex.1. Make up a sentence using the Future Continuous.

Don’t go out into the street in an hour. (pour) - It will be pouring.

1. Don’t call on us on Sunday. (enjoy the beauty of the spring out of town)

2. Don’t expect us to come next Sunday. (pick pretty flowers in the meadows)

3. Don’t wait for Ann today from eleven to twelve. (have a picnic lunch)

4. Don’t forget to take an umbrella (rain heavily) 5. Don’t ring him up tomorrow (have a good time on the bank of the river) 6. Don’t disturb her tonight (read for her examination)

Ex.2. Complete the sentences by using the Future Continuous.

Ex.3. Read the story and reproduce it.

A London policeman stops a girl crossing the street at the wrong place and says: “My dear young lady, you’ll be getting flowers, and you won’t be able to smell them.”

Ex.4. Make up dialogues similar to the suggested one.

- This time tomorrow I’ll be flying home. What will you be doing?

- I’ll be packing my luggage and looking forward to my ten days at the sea­side.

Ex.5. Translate into English.

1. Завтра в это время молодые люди из нашей группы будут играть в футбол. 2. Когда мы приедем в Москву, наверное, будет идти дождь. 3. Сейчас конец августа, скоро листья будут менять цвет. 4. Не спрашивай её ни о чём. Она опять будет говорить, что она права. 5. Посмотри на эту чёрную тучу. Думаю, минут через десять дождь будет лить как из ведра. 6. Вы легко можете представить себе, что мы будем делать, когда вы приедете: я буду загорать на берегу реки, мой младший брат – купаться, а отец – ловить рыбу. 7. Мой старший брат – хороший охотник. Ex.6. Put the verb into the Present Indefinite, the Future Indefinite and the Future Continuous.

1. Иди, малыш, домой, родители будут беспокоиться. 2. Мы идём в кино сегодня. Я думаю, что ты будешь сидеть рядом со мной. 3. Нам нужно вернуться в 10 часов. Мэри нас будет ждать в библиотеке. 4. Вы будете обедать со мной в понедельник? – Я бы очень хотела, но боюсь, что в это время я буду сдавать экзамен. 5. Я плохо себя чувствую и не смогу идти на вокзал встретить Джона. – Я встречу его.
