Past indefinite - past continuous

Ex.1. Put the verbs into the correct form.

a) I (meet) a friend while I (do) the shopping. I (pay) for my things when I (hear) someone call my name. I (turn) round and (see) Paula. She (wear) a bright red coat. We (decide) to have a cup of tea. While we (have) a drink, a waiter (drop) a pile of plates. We all (get) a terrible shock. While the waiter (pick up) the broken plates, he (cut) his finger. We (leave) the cafe and (say) goodbye. I (finish) my shopping and (go) home.

b) 1. George (fall) off the ladder while he (paint) the ceiling. 2. Last night I (read) in bed when suddenly I (hear) a scream. 3. You (watch) television when I phoned you? 4. I not (drive) very fast when the accident (happen). 5. I (break) a plate last night. I (do) the washing-up when it (slip) out of my hand. 6. Tom (take) a photograph of me while I not (look). 7. We not (go) out because it (rain). 8. I (see) Carol at the party. She (wear) a really beautiful dress. 9. While Tom (cook) dinner, the phone (ring). 10. I (fall) asleep when I (watch) television.

Ex.2. Put the words while, during, or for into each gap.

Note: While is a conjunction, and is followed by a clause (subject + verb).

e.g. I met Pete while I was studying at university.

During is a preposition, and is followed by a noun.

e.g. I worked on a farm during the holidays.

The noun after during usually expresses an activity that takes time.

e.g. during the lesson/film/football match/afternoon

While and during answer the question When?

For answers the question How long? It is followed by a time expression.

e.g. I lived there for three years.

Ex.3. Translate into English.

1. Майкл постоянно смотрел на часы. Он ждал Ирину. 2. Я слышал, что люди вокруг нас разговаривают по-немецки и по-английски, но ничего не понимал. 3. Она подошла к дому и собиралась постучать в дверь, как та внезапно открылась. 4. Ты помнишь, что ты делал в это время? 5. Я разделась и пошла на кухню, где мама жарила рыбу. 6. Когда мы вышли из кино, всё ещё шёл сильный снег. 7. Уже темнело, и я ничего не видел перед собой. 8. Она что-то писала и не подняла головы, когда я вошёл. 9.
