1.Surgut State University is fairly new. It was founded in 1993 as a municipal University with only three faculties. Today there are nine faculties including Information Technologies, Physics, and Engineering, Economics, Law, Medicine, Physical Culture, Psychology, Biology. Besides, there is a faculty of Linguistics and a faculty of History.

At present more than 3192 students study at the extra-mural department.

At the head of each faculty there is a professor.

A staff of teachers called lecturers help him. Professors and lecturers give lectures to large number of students or study with small groups, and here the students have a chance to discuss different topics. Surgut region is quickly developing and it needs highly qualified specialists for diverse branches of regional economy.

During the whole period of training the students master the basis of theoretical and practical subjects on different professions.. The University holds conferences devoted to various scientific problems.

The University is housed in a modern six-storeyed building.. The students have an opportunity to go in for various sports. An excellent sport complex is at their disposal.

Surgut State University has its own traditions. The 1st of September is the Day of Knowledge. The 25th of January is Tatyana's Day. It is held the Festival of the Students' Song on that day. In April the students take part in the annual students' scientific conference. In May the graduators of the University usually meet.

So the study at Surgut State University is informative, various, interesting and exciting: it is a mixture of education, science, communication and absorbing pastime.

2.Surgut is one of the oldest settlements in Siberia. It was founded in 1593 when many Russian explorers were moving eastwards.

A big part of the region is covered by permafrost. In the north is tundra, then comes a narrow strip of forests. The administrative centre of the Tyumen Region is Tyumen. Surgut is situated in the Khanty-Mansi National okrug. In the fifties and sixties, oil and gas fields were discovered in Western Siberia not far from Surgut, and Surgut has become the country's main oil producing area. Sometimes it is called “the oil capital of Siberia”.

Surgut is situated on the bank of the Ob River. The picture of Surgut is changing from day to day. There are many new beautiful buildings in our town now. The main street is Lenin street.

Cars, buses and taxies run up and down the streets. The street traffic is rather heavy. There is an airport, a railway station and a landing-stage in our town.

Now Surgut is not only a large industrial centre of Russia, it has a big centre of science. It is growing younger from day to day. I think in future Surgut will become a town of high culture and well- developed industry.

3.The Russian Federation

The Russian Federation is the largest country in the world. It covers the eastern part of Europe and the northern part of Asia. Its total area is about 17 million square kilometers. The country is washed by 12 seas of 3 oceans: the Pacific, the Arctic and the Atlantic. In the South Russia borders on China, Mongolia, Korea, Kazakhstan, Georgia and Azerbaijan. In the west it borders on Norway, Finland, the Baltic States, Byelorussia, the Ukraine. It also has a sea- border with the USA.

There are two Great Plains in Russia: the Great Russian Plain and the West Siberian Lowland. There are several mountain chains on the territory of the country: the Urals, the Caucasus, the Altai and others. The largest mountain chain, the Urals, separates Europe from Asia.

There are over two million rivers in Russia. Russia is rich in beautiful lakes. The world’s deepest lake (1600 metres) is Lake Baikal. Russia is very rich in oil, coal, iron ore, natural gas, copper, nickel and others mineral resources.

The capital of the country is Moscow. It is its largest political, scientific, cultural and industrial center. It is one of the oldest Russian cities.

At present, the political and economic situation in the country is rather complicated.

4.My profession.

Every year many young people who care for medicine enter medical institutes and become students.

The students study numerous theoretical and special subjects. They have practical courses during which they do the work of nurses and assistant doctor. It helps them to gain much knowledge of medicine, which will give them the possibility to diagnose different diseases and treat them. Medical students must remember that it is not easy to be a good doctor as they will be responsible for the protection of people’s health and their lives. A doctor must have not only deep knowledge of a particular field of medicine such as surgery or therapy. He must love people and have a kind heart. He must give all his know-ledge, all his abilities all his talent, and all his time to people, to the protection of their health. Medical students must under-stand well all the difficulties of their future profession. They must remember that often it will be difficult to diagnose a disease. Sometimes it will be even more difficult to cure it. But a good doctor will always do his best to win faith of his patient. And the faith of a patient in his doctor is a valuable remedy.

Russian doctors take an oath based on the Hippocratic Oath when they begin to practice medicine. These words from Hippocratic Oath must be not only words for medical students. They must become the motto of their life.

5.Robert Koch is a prominent German bacteriologist, the founder of modem microbiology. He was born in 1843,died in 1910. When Koch became a doctor he carried on many experiments on mice (Mumax) in a small laboratory. In1882 Koch discovered tuberculosis bacilli. In his report made in the Berlin Physiological Society Koch described in detail the morphology of tuberculosis bacilli and the ways to reveal them. Due to his discovery Koch became known all over the world. In 1884 Koch published his book on cholera. This book included the investigations of his research work carried out during the cholera epidemic in Egypt and India. From the intestines of the men with cholera Koch

isolated a small comma-shaped bacterium. He determined that these bacteria spread through drinking water. In 1905 Koch got the Nobel prize for his important scientific discoveries.
