Раздел п. Устная речь

I. Ознакомьтесь с вариантом рассказа:

Do you know Great Britain?

Great Bntain is one of the most highly industrialized countries in the world. The largest industrial cities if Britain are: London, Birmingham, Glasgow, Manchester, Newcastle, Liverpool, Sheffield. The district around Birmingham is a land of factories and mines. The Glasgow industrial region has many shipbuilding yards, extensive docks and textile factories. Sheffield is a big centre of steel industry, and in Manchester there are many textile factories. Liverpool is one of the biggest ports in the West. Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland. Oxford, Cambridge and Hdinburgh are university towns.

Britain is one of the largest exporters of automobiles, textile machinery, electronic equipment.

Agriculture is one of the largest and most important activities in Great Britain. Four fifths of the land is devoted to it and it provides employment for over a million people *

Sheep-farming, cattle-farming and dairy-farming are still important branches in the British economy. Vegetables are grown in all parts of the country. The chief grain crops are wheat and barley.

Now some words about the social system of Great Britain. Great Britain is a monarchy, the power of the Queen of Great Britain is not absolute, but constitutional. It is limited by Parliament, which consists of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Members are elected only to the House of Commons. The Prime Minister is usually the leader of the party that has a majority in the House of Commons. That party which obtains the majority of seats in the House of Commons is called the Government and the others - Opposition.

The House of Lords is not elected. It consists of bankers, steel magnets, newspaper proprietors and industrialists of all kinds.

The British Government consists of the Prime Minister and other Ministers.

Parliamentary procedure is based on introducing a Bill. Every Bill has three readings. After the third reading the Bill goes before the House of Lords and if ihe Lords agree to the Bill, it will be placed before the Queen for signature Only then Bill becomes Low. So the role of the monarchy in Great Britain is great.
