1. What are the professional prospects of being a geologist? Discuss possible opportunities. (text 1)

It is widely believed that there are not enough jobs currently to go around for those trained in geology, but I believe that substantial opportunity does exist for future professional geologist in tomorrow’s changing world. On one side geology can help in finding and using resourses in an efficient manner. Specialties, such as petroleum geology, hydrogeology and economic geology will continue to be important because the demand for the earth resourses will continue for the future.

On the other side preserving the environment is extremely important social value nowadays. The geologists are those who involved in mitigating or containing pollution of the earth. The future of geology will be in assessing, monitoring and minimazing environmental impacts and in the efficient discovery and production of the earth’s mineral wealth.

2. In what way can geological employment be described as cyclical?(text 2) Geological employment traditionally has been cyclical. These cycles are periods of rapid growth and expansion and periods of reduction. During periods of rapid growth and expansion, the major oil companies – the primary employers of geoscientists – have added employees. In other times, such as now, the major companies downsize, selling many of their domestic properties and reducind stuff size. Timing of the periods of high employment has been difficult to predict. In some cases students who made the decision in the geoscience during boom days, only find few prospective employment opportunities when they ready to go to work. Avoiding these difficulties tomorrow’s geologist will need to be more independently minded and gauged than those of the past. Optimism, selfmotivation, flexibility, and creativity will be important.

3. What is professionalism in geology? Discuss different aspects.

The dictionary defines professionalism as the conduct, aims or qualities that characterize or mark a professionalism person. A professional person is one who is engaged in a learned profession and who has an assured competence in a given field or occupation. A professional develops an attitude that brings about a dedication of time and effort to acquire knowledge and to apply it for the benefit of mankind. So it is linked to competence knowledge and ethics. All geologist are both a scientists and a professionals.

There are some guidelines for becoming a professional:

  • Know what you know. Always keep learning.

  • Know what you don’t know; don’t bluff opinions on matters about which you are not informed.

  • Acquire a broad overview of geological knowledge, not only as a science, but also as a business.

  • Comply with the hightest standards of ethical behavior.

  • Communicate

4. How is ethics involved in the professional activity of a geologist?

Professionalism is tightly connected with ethics. Ethical behavior in individual's professional life is motivated by desire for a good reputation, enhancement of productivity, fear of sanction demands of society and requirements of professional affiliations (societies). And, of course, all of it is based on personal moral principles.

Professional geologist is expected not only to have an appropriate attitude toward his working duties, but also toward his colleagues and clients, as adherence to the commonly recognized norms of ethics surely will help in successful networking.

Many major geological companies and societies have their own Code of Ethics. It sets standards of business ethics, personal honor and professional conduct to its members, helps them both to grow as professionals personally and to bring prosperity to the company.

5. What is so specific and peculiar about the first year of employmentfor a geologist. In what way is it different from any other one?

You should operate with the notion that you are a provisional employee during your first year on the job. It is a great opportunity to show your best habbits and skills. Look on it as a mutual opportunity for you to demonstrate what a conscientious, capable geologist you are, how rapidly and thoroughly you learn and grow, how well you work with others and how concerned with the firms welfare you are. Set goals and fulfill them; watch the people and learn the best habits, seek advice (people usually happy to share their knowlerge), be enthusiastic (because you can find thing in the geology that you really enjoy do).

The first year is also an opportunity for you to assess the firm as a place in which to purpose a fulfilling professional caree. It is a start up for other years of your employment.

6. What are the most important skills and activities for a first-year geologist employee? Give reasons and examples (текст 4).

For a first-year geologist employee the most important skills are the ability to quickly and thoroughly learn and grow, good teamwork, a willingness to do the job no matter how long it will take time.

It is important to set goals for work to be done each day and fulfill them on time and within budjet.

It should watch people around you and learn from them. It is needful to seek advice from those who are the most proficient at their jobs.

It is important to be enthusiastic! Be always ready for new challenges and approach your profession with a positive attitude.

Your work will be of value only if you can communicate your results clearly to others. All maps, graphs tables, reports or presentations should be crystal clear.

Improve your communicative skills. Try to maintain a cheerful patient and positive attitude for other people.

And the most important thing about the first year is continuing your education.

7. Give your understanding of the following: ”Even after graduating you constantly continue your education”. Show using examples how this can be applied to your field of studies.

As we all know the studying in MSU teaches us “to learn”, because education should never stop. Geology is both a science and a profession that’s why as a scientist you will find that scientific knowledge is always growing. It’s important to keep up with the literature in your field, become a member of some professional scientific organization. It is also important to read scientific magazines and improve your knowledge of foreign language, especially English, to co-operate with your colleagues from all over the world.

8. Disscuss the importance of setting goals for caree development.

Our geological caree often progress haphazardly as a result of random assignments and events. Our view of caree development can’t always be the same with employer’s view because different interests are involved. So if we have doubts about firms future plans on us, it is our responsibility to seek clarifications. Clear and constructive communication about personal caree plans and goals is absolutely essential and should take place at least twice a year. First you should recognize what you’ll be doing and learning, what your responsobilities will be, and what new opportunities are opeing up. In general, you should focus on the fascination and fulfillment the work brings and on where that situation is likely to lead. Try to formulate your targets, and be sure your mid-term goal furthers the attainment of your long-term goal! You shoul also formulate the specific steps that will optimize your chances of achieving your personal goals. It will make you stretch.

9. What are different time frames for career planning? Which in your opinion is of greatest importance?

The commonly used time frames are:

  • short-term (1-2 years)

  • mid-term (3-8 years)

  • long-term (8-20 years)

I think the most important are mid-term goals, because they can determine and clarify your caree progression for the period from 3 to 8 years, which is broad enough to accommodate many of reccuring uncertanies, but still enough for measuring progress. Now mid-term goals for me include start of planning my career during the learning process, carefully choosing the location for my practices appropriative interests of employment. This will allow me to make a preliminary choice, looking around and making it easier to decide at the end of the studying.

10. Giving examples, agree or disagree with the following: "Personal goals do not necessarily match your organizational career".

I can't help but agree with this statement. There are two concurrent perspectives in a matter of career planning and goal setting: personal and organizational. Commonly, these two perspectives will coincide, occasionally, they will diverge. Often your company will work closely with you to set mutually beneficial goals, usually over a multi-year time frame. But sometimes the firm, or your own evolving values, may send you a clear signal that your personal career goals are not likely to be met within the organization. Frequently, you will find that your employer has specific ideas about your career progression within the organizational framework. After all, the firm is understandably self-interested.

If this kind of problem of conflicted interests arises, patience is advised. First of all, new assignment may open up a new promising area of professional specialization. Also, another employer may not necessarily be an improvement, and I can think of many examples of how some geologists I know keep changing their workplace in search of better conditions, but to no avail, since their personal goals and organizational view on that matter do not agree.

11. It is generally recommended that caree goals be set for the period of time between 2 and 8 years. How con you explain that? Do you agree with this recommended time span?

In my opinion, it is important to set goals during the mid-term period, because it shoud be general and sometimes very successful, and when you work about 2-8 years you can become the good expert in any area of a science.

12. Speak on possible impediments (преграды) for career-making in geology and reasonable ways of avoiding or overcoming them.

When you start your geo-career there is a lot of impediments that you should overcome. You should demonstrate what a conscientious, capable geologist you are, how rapidly you learn and grow, how well you work alone and with others. From your first day on the job remember that your education in the geological sciences has made you a professional, but nevertheless watch the people around you and learn from them, emulate the work habits. Set short-term, mid-term and long-term goals and try to fulfill them.

In profeesionalny geology there is a fine-bored circle of people, and it’s becomes a problem for young scientists and experts. Networking is the most effective and inexpensive way to keep informed of geotechnical developments, multiply opportunities, and leverage your presence throughout the oil patch. Knowing who is doing what , and where the money is coming from will help you to benefit from greater access to new business opportunities and requests for your services. Geological employment traditionally has been cyclical. These cycles are periods of rapid growth and expansion and periods of reduction. In times, such as now, the major companies downsize, selling many of their domestic properties and reducind stuff size and it makes huge problems for young specialists.

13. What is networking and why is it essential for making the career? (текст 6)

Networking is the purposefully pursuing and maintaining regular personal contacts among old friends and acquaintances and actively cultivating new relationships with the specific objective of keeping current in one's profession and developing new business opportunities. For career development must constantly establish links and maintain contacts, so you can have access to new opportunities, long-term business contacts, to the mutual exchange of information. A good networking improves the business asset, allows you to set a mutually beneficial relationship and to develop a career.
