My favorite newspapers

It's almost impossible to imagine our life without newspapers. Millions of copies of them appear every day. On the news stalls one can find newspapers of all kinds: national and local, official and private, quality and popular, newspapers issued for children, teenagers, people of different trends, for all kinds of fans: sport-fans, car-fans, etc. The freedom of press has become actual and real today.

There are national daily newspapers, such as Sovetskaya Belarus, Komsomolskaya Pravda in Belarus, Zvyazda; national weekly papers, for example Sem Dney, Argumenty and Fakty, which have a member of supplements (like "Dochky Matery, Ya Molodoy). Most national papers express a political opinion and people choose the newspaper they read according to their political believes.

There are local papers in all parts of Belarus. In Minsk the most popular local newspaper is Vecherny Minsk. There are also many free local newspapers which are delivered to people's homes; usually they contain a lot of advertisements. One can find newspapers for children and teenagers, for sports fans and for people from all walks of life.

I'd like to tell you about newspapers my family subscribes to. They are "Komsamolskaya Pravda in Belarus" and "Argumenty and Facty".

First, from my point of view most of Belarussians are subscribed to the newspaper "Komsomolskaya Pravda in Belarus". This newspaper is issued daily. is issued weekly.

For me, it is always a special occasion to read this newspaper, because it informs the reader of recent international and domestic affairs.

The editor-in-chief has a very powerful editorial board: correspondents, commentators, reporters and observers keep millions of people informed. They cover the topics lively and interesting and contribute to the development of journalism in Belarus. I don't try to persuade you to read this particular newspaper but I share the editor's-in-chief point of view on life. I like the way of representation of information.

At the same time I would like to make critical comments on the newspaper. I disapprove of advertising and particularly some advertisements in which there is plenty of rubbish. Serious newspapers mustn't publish such things to my mind.

Now, it's "Argumenty and Facty". It's a national weekly newspaper. Its make up attracts readers. Typeface size and styles are diversified. The occasional colour printing, the numerous photographs inside the paper, the clean and neat columns and the occasional use of colour for borders all give the paper the image of being carefully planned. This newspaper informs the readers of wide range of questions: the life of our country, the most significant foreign affairs. On the last pages you can find "features" — articles that cover a wide range of subjects: reviews of books, criticism on the theatre, on music, art, films, articles on science, travel, chess problems, a TV guide and the weather forecast. You can get answer on the questions you are interested in in the special column "Letters to the Editor". "Argumenty and Fakty" is popular among young and old people. Our family enjoys reading it, too. From time to time each member of our family buys a supplement to taste, as the newspaper offers a number of them which are published weekly: "Zdorovye", "Ya Molodoy", "Dochky-Matery" and others.
