I. Aivazovsky

Ivan Aivazovsky (1817-1900) is one of the most popular Russian artists. He devoted more than sixty years of his life to painting and left nearly six thousand works in which he depicted the sea as a symbol of power, courage, struggle and freedom. Aivazovsky’s fame spread beyond Russia. He was elected a member of the Academies of Fine Art in St. Petersburg, Rome, Florence, Stuttgart and Amsterdam. Aivazovsky’s life was long. At the beginning of his creative activity he had the chance of meeting with Pushkin, Gogol, Glinka, Karl Briullov and Alexander Ivanov. In the second half of the nine­teenth century Aivazovsky was already known as one of the most talented masters of realistic landscape, and his work was highly valued by the most famous representatives of progressive Russian cul­ture – Kramskoy, Repin and Stasov.

Exhibitions of pictures by this master of marine painting were organized in Russia and in many countries of the world. Aivazovsky's paintings were shown in Rome, Naples, Florence, Paris, London, Amsterdam, Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Bucharest, New York, Washington, San Francisco and Copenhagen. His pictures were bought in Italy, England, France, Africa and America.

At every period of the artist's life the sea had a profound attraction for him. He could paint a moonlit seascape of astounding beauty, but could also depict the ocean in rough weather – low, dark clouds, and violent ocean scenes – sea battles. Aivazovsky was a master at representing the chan­ging aspects of the sea, at portraying its various moods, arid remained loyal to his chosen genre to the very end of his life. An unfinished seascape at which he was working on the day of his death re­mains in his studio. Although he continued the traditions of the grea­test Russian landscape painters of the beginning of the century, Aivazovsky created a school of his own, which greatly influenced marine painting of his time and of later periods. After seeing Aivazovsky's paintings of the Mediterranean, the great English seascape painter Turner expressed his admiration of the young painter’s work.

Aivazovsky’s masterpieces “The Ninth Wave” (The Russian Museum, St. Petersburg), “The Black Sea” (The Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow), “The Rainbow” (The Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow) rank among the most popular works in Russian painting.
