Michalangelo

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (1475 – 1564), commonly known as Michelangelo, was an Italian Renaissance painter, sculptor, architect, poet, and engineer. Michelangelo's output in every field during his long life was tremendous; when all the correspondence, sketches, and reminiscences that survive is also taken into account, he is the best-documented artist of the 16th century. Two of his best-known works, “the Pietà” and “David”, were sculpted before he turned thirty. Despite his low opinion of painting, Michelangelo also created two of the most influential works in fresco in the history of Western art: the scenes from “Genesis” on the ceiling and “The Last Judgment”on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. As an architect, Michelangelo pioneered the Mannerist style at the Laurentian Library. At 74 he succeeded Antonio da Sangallo the Younger as the architect of Saint Peter's Basilica. Michelangelo transformed the plan, the western end being finished to Michelangelo's design, the dome being completed after his death with some modification.

Whether in painting, sculpture or architecture, Michelangelo's influence has been immense. Although he restricted himself to the nude in painting, his expressive use of the idealized human form had a tremendous impact on contemporaries and future generations.

Michaelangelo was born on 6th March 1475 in Caprese, where his father Lodovico Buonarroti, served as a magistrate for six months. Ludovico was not a wealthy man but he claimed he was descended from an aristocratic family and he was very proud of this connection. Michaelangelo grew up in Settignano, a little mountain town just outside Florence. One of the first sights Michaelangelo must have become familiar with was the dome of the beautiful Cathedral in Florence, which dominated the city then as it still does today. At school, Michaelangelo was by no means an outstanding pupil; lessons did not appeal to him at all. The only thing he wanted to do was to draw and waste his time time' as his elders probably called it, in the workshops of the various painters and sculptors in the city. One can imagine the eager boy, for whom art was the most important thing in his whole life, gazing at the wonderful pictures and statues which filled the beautiful churches of Florence. His best friend while he was still a schoolboy was Francesco Granacci, who, although six years older than Michaelangelo, seems to have taken an interest in the boy and helped him with his attempts to draw and paint.

Michaelangelo's choice of profession did not please his father at all. Only the most

successful of artists in Florence stood any chance of making any money.
