Exercise 1. Match the words on the left with their definitions on the right:

Exercise 2. Discuss vocabulary of the previous exercise using the following models:

B. – Let me see. Ah, it means bright green precious stone.

1. – Thank you, Thomas, you are very helpful.

B. – You are welcome. Ask any time you need.

Model 2:

1. – Thomas, do you know the meaning of the word to rise?

B. – Sorry, which word? Could you repeat it again?

1. – To rise.

2. – Ah, to rise. It means to appear above the horizon.

A. – To appear above the horizon? Is that right?

B. – Yes, it is. If you don’t trust me you’d better consult a dictionary.

A. – No, I’d better trust you.

Exercise 3. Translate the fragment from I. Turgenev’s story “Bezhin Meadow” into English using the list of vocabulary above and the following sentence structures:

Солнце село, но в лесу еще светло; воздух чист и прозрачен; птицы болтливо лепечут; молодая трава блестит веселым блеском изумруда … вы ждете. Внутренность леса постепенно темнеет; алый свет вечерней зари медленно скользит по корням и стволам деревьев, поднимается все выше и выше, переходит от нижних почти еще голых веток к неподвижным засыпающим верхушкам … Вот и самые верхушки потускнели; румяное небо синеет.
