Cambridge is mainly a town of students. Cambridge University is one of the oldest universities in Great Britain. Many great men studied at Cambridge, among them Newton, the scientist, Bacon, the philosopher, Milton, the poet, Cromwell, the soldier and statesman. There are 19 colleges at the University now, two of them are for women students. Women students do not take a very active part in university life at Cambridge. But they work harder than men and you seldom see them outside of the classroom.

The students are mainly English but there are plenty of others. There is a variety of races, religions and point of view among the students of the University.

Wireless is of importance in university education. At home students after their day's work can hear lecturies by eminent teachers on all kinds of subjects. Every student has a tutor. The tutor plans his student's work and discusses with them their work.

The story of Cambridge University began in 1209. That year several hundred students arrived in the little town of Cambridge from Oxford. Life at Oxford was very hard at that time as there was constant trouble between the people of the town and the students. One day a student accidentally killed a man of the town. The Mayor arrested three other students and odered to hang them. In protest all the students moved to different parts of the country and some came to Cambridge; and so the new University began.

US UNIVERSITY EDUCATION

There is no National University in the USA. Each state controls and supports at least one University. The National Government gives no direct financial aid to these state schools. The students do not go to the University free of charge. Everyone must pay a tuition fee. The amount varies from state to state. Student total expenses throughout the year are very high. And though each University offers a number of scholarships many of the students have to work to pay for their expenses.

Most of the US Universities have a central campus. Colleges of Law, Business, Medicine, Engineering, Music and Journalism can be found in one campus. Thus a student can attend courses at various colleges.

The students do not take the same courses. During the first two years they follow a basic program. It means that every student must select at least one course from each of the basic fields of study : English, science, modern languages, history or physical education.

After the first two years every student majors in one subject and minors in another. A student can major in history and minor in sociology. In addition to these major and minor courses he can select other subjects according to his professional interest. After completing four years of study the students receive Bachelor Degree (either B. A. or B. S.) with an additional year of study he may receive a Master’s Degree and after two or three years of graduate work and writing the dissertation he receives a Doctorate Degree. Over four years at the end of each year students have a final written examination. They take oral exams and write a dissertation only for advanced degrees.
